El Universal regrets to report on the death of Alejandro Galvis Ramírez, who made El Universal y Vanguardia one of the most important media in the country and who was also a co-founder of the National News Agency, Colprensa.
Alejandro Galvis Ramírez was an economist, specialist in newspaper management at the University of Chicago and a master’s degree in Business Administration at the University of Michigan. He was president of the board of directors of El Universal for 20 years and as head of Vanguardia he was the largest shareholder of the newspaper. He was the person who started the transformation of El Universal in 1978 to what it is today.
He assumed the management of Vanguardia in July 1967, a position from which he made Vanguardia the most important media outlet in Santander and one of the most recognized in Colombia.
Among the many achievements of his life as an entrepreneur is the transformation and consolidation of Vanguardia, with new managerial and administrative techniques. In addition, it consolidated itself as one of the most important businessmen in the information sector after acquiring media such as El Universal, La Tarde de Pereira, Liberal de Popayán and El Nuevo Día de Ibagué.
He was also co-founder of the Colprensa National News Agency and chaired the National Association of Newspapers, Andiarios
In the field of livestock, another of his passions, he created and directed the company El Madrigal, with which he contributed a very important development to the different bovine breeds, especially the Brown Swiss, whose copies have been to increase the breed in various regions of the country and have been awarded in the best fairs
His exceptional work ethic and his commitment and passion for the development of the department earned him great decorations such as the Cruz de Boyacá, the Order of Industrial Merit, the Order of Livestock Merit and the highest distinctions from the Inter-American Press Society and the Government of Santander.
