Only 12 hours had passed since 2021 and the Administrative Department of Disaster Risk Management (DAGRD) had attended 12 incidents, of which five were balloon fires of incandescent wick.

But the most complicated case was in Bello, in the north of the Aburrá valley, it exploded and caused fear in the community on the night of December 31.

On video it was recorded how the community of the Mesa neighborhood got a good scare by this artifact, which it got stuck in a utility pole and began to explode.

Seconds later, everything was panic in this sector and those who were celebrating, ended up running.

Another of the emergencies was the one that appeared in the early morning of this Friday in the parish house of the San Antonio de Prado district.

“The most relevant case was registered in San Antonio de Prado, where we had an injury and the Casa Cural was totally destroyed,” said Alethia Arango, director of Dagrd.

According to the parish priest of the church Eduardo Yepes, the incident occurred around 1:00 in the morning, when the balloon fell on the roof of the parish, in a part of the courtyard, which had a plastic roof, so he set the house on fire.

“The firefighters responded quickly, they came, put out the fire, but since this house made of wild cane had the roof, possibly they did not put it out completely and the fire started again and we totally lost the house,” lamented the father in statements to the Telemedellín channel.

In turn, during a press conference, Brigadier General Eliécer Camacho, commander of the Metropolitan Police, stated that there are still irresponsible people on the issue of balloons.

“The firefighters initially carry out the intervention. We have a serious structural damage to the church, and we are accompanying the parish priest from the first moment. This is due to the irresponsibility of some people who continue to launch these balloons,” he said.
