The young victim would have turned 22 on February 16, but in exchange for that he is a few days after the first anniversary of his death for facts that the authorities have not been able to clarify.
Precisely with the commemoration of these dates, Nidia Romero spoke with El Tiempo about several of the points of the investigation that seeks the reasons why her daughter lost her life and to determine if it was a femicide or a traffic accident.
Among the latest statements from the defense of Paul Naranjo, the main suspect, there was talk of the possibility of compensation that would be around 100 million pesos and that, coincidentally, would be paid with the Kia Sportage truck involved in the case.
Given that, the woman delivered a concise statement about what she thinks of that possibility:
“That would have been 5,000 million pesos, no, a child has no value.”
Although he did not say so, those words would suggest that the victim’s family is not willing to reconcile with the co-authors of the aggravated femicide of Ana María Castro —Paul Naranjo and Julián Ortegón— and that the case could end in a complicated judgment.
In addition, as the lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella had told him a few days ago, if Naranjo and Ortegón are found guilty, “An incident of comprehensive reparation will still have to be processed and in any case they will have to contribute some money from their resources for that compensation”.
The criminal lawyer rejected that the defense of the accused seeks to change the definition of the crime, from aggravated femicide to wrongful death, as if they were seeking to “escape responsibility” and said that he will reject any attempt to talk about an accident.
Precisely on this hypothesis, Nidia Romero said in the interview:
“One might wonder… for example, I drive, so if one of those things happens to me, then I stayed there. And, on the other hand, you judge, a boy who has been maintaining for almost a year that he left you standing there, and right now he says that it could have been an accident, because it seems very convenient ”.
And, along the same lines, he specified: “I have never thought that it was an accident because of the things that are beginning to happen. The change of versions, that the cell phone does not appear … I have never thought that it was a traffic accident and that he could have been scared, because precisely the fear in a person makes a face look. Which owes nothing fears nothing“.
And precisely on the cell phone, he also wanted to clarify that “it is not worth 6 million pesos” as stated by Jhon Cadena, Naranjo’s lawyer. And he said that he is certain of it because it was a gift from him to Ana María who, thanks to insurance, it cost 587,000 pesos.
That is why she does not understand why the cell phone is lost, she believes that the driver of the truck should have approached her and said: “Look, ma’am, I know you are hating me. I didn’t do anything, it wasn’t my fault and here is Ana María’s cell phone… to me or to the authorities ”. Even his lawyer De la Espriella believes that the mobile device is being hidden because it could contain chats that would prove that it was a femicide.
The mother of the university student pointed out that “everything is a matter of research anyway.” She also said that she is prepared for her daughter to try to damage her image and emphasized that her daughter’s necropsy “says that she appears with alcohol but not with drugs“, As the others involved in the case have suggested. In addition, it could be investigated whether Mateo Reyes, the third party involved, sold narcotics.
“Knowing the truth would allow me to start a duel, because I could not”, closed Mrs. Romero.
