Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo published a statement this Thursday in which he refers to the ruling of the Civil Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, a ruling that assured that there is a systematic violation of the right to protest, and in which this Court he ordered him within 48 hours offer an apology for the excesses committed by the Public Force during the National Strike last year.
In the statement published this Thursday, the defense minister assures that “on the occasion of the guardianship of September 22” of the Civil Cassation Chamber, “It is allowed to reiterate to public opinion that on September 11, 2020 the Minister of Defense, In a spontaneous, sincere, transparent and respectful act, widely disseminated, it stated that: ‘(…) The National Police apologizes for any violation of the law or ignorance of the regulations in which any of the members of the institution may have incurred “”.
In other words, in his statement, the minister cites the apology he had offered two weeks ago when the events that angered the country due to the murder of Javier Ordóñez, for which two police officers were charged by the Attorney General’s Office, became known.

According to Minister Trujillo, “that spontaneous expression of forgiveness refers to any violation of the Law, at any time, in which any of the members of the Institution have incurred, thereby guaranteeing respect for due process that assists each one of the members of the Public Force “.

In addition, in his statement the minister assures that it will correspond to the competent judicial and disciplinary authorities “determine responsibilities in each individual case.”

Among the 14 orders that the Civil Cassation Chamber gave the Government, in its fourth numeral the high court told Minister Trujillo that he had to “present an apology for the excesses of the public force, especially, those committed by the Mobile Anti-Riot Squads of the National Police (Esmad) during the protests that took place in the country as of November 21, 2019 “.
According to the Court, these apologies must “be broadcast in the same term, by radio, television and social networks.”
