Millonarios achieved their first goal: to win in the debut of the League in 2021. The ambassador team, with several homegrown players on the roster, defeated Envigado 1-0 at the Palogrande Stadium and, in this way, started the new FPC season.
Alberto Gamero’s team showed two different phases during the 90 minutes. In the first half he opted for the attack on the wings, in a game of quick transitions, with a constant deployment of both sides; Thus leaving a great figure to Émerson Rodríguez, who, at minute 20, in complicity with goalkeeper Londoño, scored the goal that gave the ambassador team the victory.
However, in the second half, the people from the capital went from dominating the match to waiting in their field for the attack of the oranges. Gamero’s variants gave the blue team a little more possession, but this change ended up affecting them in offense and defense. In the setback, the containment was affected, so, at the end of the match, Juan Moreno ended up being essential to achieve victory.
Jader Valencia (incumbent), Fredy Guarín, Hárrison Mojica and Daniel Ruíz, the new faces of the ambassador for this semester, made their debut.
Keys to victory
First time: In the first 45 minutes, Millonarios was better than Envigado. With still ball plays and changes of pace, the ambassador showed some offensive superiority. Juan Pablo Vargas, upside down, and Émerson Rodríguez, had the clearest options to score the first goal of the afternoon.
Precisely, it was the youth squad Rodríguez, who, in one of his individual plays on the right wing, managed to score the goal of the three points. In addition, throughout the game, he was the man who led the attack of the Blues. He attended and finished off the goal, he was the one who tried the most.
Quarry: In Millonarios, the talent of the quarry has become a custom and on this occasion, the young promises were once again essential. Vega, Bertel, Valencia, Guerra, Rodríguez and goalkeeper Moreno were starters, but these last two mentioned were key pieces to get the first victory of the year.
Moreno, with his saves in the final stretch, saved the ambassador team from a draw; while Rodríguez, with his imbalance and constant attack, gave the three units to Albiazul.
Aspects to improve
Changes: The variations in the positions and in the scheme did not work for Millonarios, he went from dominating a match to ending up suffering the victory in the second half. The team went from being superior to being less than Envigado at the end of the game, showing no changes at the offensive level and balance when the game got complicated. That aspect ended up affecting the collective performance.
Physical: Although Millonarios was one of the last teams to finish the 2020 season, several players from the blue squad found themselves lacking in rhythm and air in the development of the game. Surely, this will be an aspect that Alberto Gamero will work with special attention in the coming days.
Reinforcement: It is very early to talk about the performance of the new faces of Millonarios for 2021. Valencia, Guarín, Mojica and Ruiz, played their first game of the season with blue; however, players like Valencia and Mojica will have to put out their best side to fight for a place in the starter, as they were the ones who played the most minutes in the match. Neither of them excelled in their first game.
In Guarín’s case, it was evident that he is not in his best physical shape. He played 20 minutes, managed the times and gave order in certain sections to the team. Knowing its characteristics and experience, it still has a lot to give. Ruiz only played a couple of minutes, he has talent.
