A controversy broke out this Thursday in Colombia after a group of Colombian soldiers stole humanitarian aid for the Caribbean island of Providencia, completely destroyed by the category five hurricane Iota last November, for which the soldiers will be sanctioned. The commander of the National Navy, Admiral Gabriel Pérez, affirmed that “there is an absolutely clear disciplinary offense” and that the institution has already identified those involved in the robbery.
“This improper action, in every sense, overshadows the great effort that has been made around the recovery of the island. The fact is evident and here all the corresponding disciplinary actions will be taken to punish and prevent ”, added the admiral to the Caracol Radio station.
The archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, the only insular department in Colombia, was hit at dawn on November 16 by the impact of Hurricane Iota, which destroyed Providencia’s infrastructure and left almost all of its 5,000 inhabitants homeless.
THE COMPLAINT
The singer Jiggy Drama published on his social networks a video in which a woman went to the place where the humanitarian aid for the island is to ask “if they had clothes for men”, to which the military answered no.
In the video, which went viral on social networks, it is seen how later the uniformed men are taking out some garments that are supposedly to be delivered to the community “but they distribute them among themselves first,” added the woman who recorded the piece and narrates the happened.
“One put a pair of pants in his pocket, the other got on a motorcycle, the other took two pairs of shoes and left, and so on (…) Yesterday many people came to ask and said there were none,” he said. .
In this regard, the General Command of the Military Forces indicated in a statement that it ordered the Army and the Navy to “issue instructions so that the necessary measures are investigated and taken” in light of what happened.
“The Military Forces characterized by their discipline, training and fulfillment of the mission, reiterate their total disposition to deal with complaints and irregularities that affect the good name of the institution,” the information added.
CORRUPTION ON THE ISLANDS
On December 17, Colombia’s attorney general, Fernando Carrillo, assured that the corruption that exists in the Caribbean archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina is more serious than any hurricane that has affected them.
This was expressed when referring to a surveillance that will develop over 5,000 contracts signed by the Government of that department this year and that also investigates another 1,500 for a possible parallel payroll, all for an amount of 191,000 million pesos (about 55.9 millions of dollars).
