The Colombian cyclist Miguel ngel Lpez (Astana), who suffered a hard each this Saturday during the opening time trial of the Giro d’Italia, was operated on for a deep wound near the ilaca artery, but the medical examinations to which he was subjected excluded fractures .
“The X-rays have shown that there are no fractures. He suffered a deep wound very close to the iliac artery, for which he has been operated and from which he will recover in the next few hours,” reported Astana team doctor Serge Niamke.
“Regarding his accident, Miguel ngel has not had other serious injuries. He was able to leave the hospital on foot and returned to the team hotel. We will see how he feels tomorrow (for Sunday) to return home,” he added.
Superman Lopez, who had been racing for 9 minutes on the clock, lost control of his bike going through a pothole with only one hand on the handlebars and crashed into the side fences of the road.
The 26-year-old Colombian runner was helped by security officials stationed in that area before an ambulance arrived to take him to a nearby Palermo hospital.
