The complaint was made by one of the victims of Hurricane Iota in San Andrés and Providencia, Roque Julio Gallardo Archbold, who in dialogue with Semana said that at this moment on the island there is total chaos and a lack of organization.

“There is no organized situation, and there is a small group of gang members who have been looting the warehouses, breaking them, and there are people who go with two or three freezers for their house,” said Gallardo.

The man told that media that the looters “are people from the same island, who are living there, pBut mostly they are young people who are stealing everything there is”.

The witness called on the authorities to help them with this situation, as he said that there are merchants who still owe bank loans and that what little they had left, after the hurricane, is now being stolen.

Merchants ask for help for looting in Providencia

This complaint was joined by the merchant Luis Newball, who in an interview with Noticias Caracol said that his family has had to stand guard in the business to prevent thefts.

“This was similar to Tasajera (the looting of the truck with gasoline that caught fire), incredible. Here so much that we criticize people when that truck turned over and they left that man with nothing, but here it has been incredible. It doesn’t fit in my head, people taking refrigerators, televisions, air conditioners, for what? If this is a disaster. In Providencia there is no house, nothing was left standing, “Newball said on the news.

Another Providencia merchant, who identified himself as Diego Flórez, told that outlet that people feel unsafe because the National Police were withdrawn from there, and because “the weapons were sent to San Andrés. So, we were at the mercy of all the people who wanted to attack our premises”.
