“He no longer wanted to go on living.”
Meghan Markle revealed that she had suicidal thoughts during his time as an active member of the British royal family.
The Duchess of Sussex broke her silence about her life as part of the monarchy during a controversial interview with American journalist Oprah Winfrey.
The conversation, lasting two hours and in which Prince Harry also participated, was broadcast this Sunday in the United States and in it both spoke at length about what led them to withdraw from their duties.
“Both Meghan and Harry come off favorably, speaking without rancor but with the greatest clarity about a time in their lives that they both clearly regret, “says BBC Royal Household Affairs Correspondent Jonny Dymond.
“This is explosive content: pure, revealing and hugely harmful for the Palace [de Buckingham]”, he emphasizes.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex resigned from their roles as members of the British royal family in March 2020 and now live in California.
The couple met on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend in 2016, and they tied the knot in 2018.
“A constant and terrifying thought”
At one point in the conversation, Winfrey asked about past statements from the Duchess of Sussex, in which she described the experience as royalty as something almost impossible to “survive”.
“It sounds like there was a turning point,” said the journalist.
“I just didn’t want to go on living anymore,” Markle replied, explaining that she felt “embarrassed, ashamed” to confess to Prince Harry, her husband, for the great “losses he has suffered.”
“It was a constant, real and terrifying thought“, he pointed.
The Duchess of Sussex assured that she requested help from “the Institution” (Buckingham Palace), asking them to go somewhere where they would assist her.
His request was rejected, he said.
“Did you have suicidal thoughts?” Asked the famous American journalist.
“Yes,” Meghan Markle replied. “I thought that would solve everything for everyone“.
“Explosive” comments
In the interview, the Duchess of Sussex also revealed that a member of the British royal family raised concerns about how dark your firstborn’s skin would be, Archie.
The Duchess of Sussex’s statements provoked expressions of astonishment from the journalist, who asked exactly whom he was referring to.
According to Markle, it was a conversation between members of the British royal family and Prince Harry.
Asked about these comments, the Duke of Sussex declined to offer more details: “I will never talk about that conversation.”
“At the time, it was weird, I was a little shocked“he noted, adding that that conversation took place” right at the beginning “of their relationship.
Prince Harry, for his part, also revealed that they no longer supported them financially, the reason why they sought project deals with Netflix and Spotify, and that their father, Prince Charles, he no longer answers the phone.
During the interview, both of them also announced that they expect a girl and they further revealed that they were secretly married three days before their official wedding date, in May 2018.
What to expect after a “devastating” interview
Jonny dymong, CRoyal Household correspondent, BBC
Meghan and Harry have upended the narrative created by the best-selling British press.
They have revealed the terrible pressures within the palace. They have painted a picture of insensitive individuals in an indifferent institution. They have spoken of racism in the royal family.
Oprah’s was a devastating interview. But Harry describing his brother and father as “trapped”, and Meghan revealing that he repeatedly asked for help only to meet rejection, is a severe blow to the institution.
It is not entirely clear if or when Buckingham Palace will respond. Many of the revelations are so personal that getting some kind of reaction seems unlikely. The queen has repeatedly made her affection for the couple clear.
And about the newspapers that the couple despise so much: will they change their tone? It is not in it’s nature.
There were bile-laden pages in some Sunday newspapers leading up to the interview. Meghan and Harry have waived the possibility of a fair trial by many of the most popular publications in the country.
It seems extremely unlikely that they will see something posted that will change their mind.
