Although the Antioquia Governor’s Office indicated that they expect a covid-19 outbreak in mid-October, from Medellín they indicated that they expect an effect of ups and downs in the cases.

“We have a curve that presented a decline, but then had a stabilization. For the next few days we expect a kind of sine wave effect, but within the framework that we have built of 1,000 intensive care beds. This allows us not to have to close the city, ”said the mayor of the city, Daniel Quintero.

In the worst case, if something extraordinary happens that causes the curve to reactivate, the local president indicated that the city would go back to the 4-3 model (four days open for three days closed). “But that today is far from happening,” Quintero said.

The capital of Antioquia has 70,494 accumulated cases of covid, of which 1,870 are active (cut off to October 8).

This indicates a recovery rate of more than 95 percent (67,215 recovered) and a fatality rate of almost 2 percent (1,409 cases).

Quintero indicated that the city is still at its peak, but that, with the model applied in the city, in which the economy opened at the peak of the pandemic, “Instead of going down and up in cases, a ‘plateau’ effect was generated, which is what we are experiencing today and it is the administration of the curve to avoid the collapse of the health system. That is what epidemiologists look for in the care of an epidemic, which is to be able to flatten that curve ”

With about 308 free ICU beds, 670 occupied (252 with covid patients) and 22 blocked, the municipal mayor’s office indicated that they have a margin that allows them to face an eventual regrowth.

Of the total active patients, according to figures from the mayor’s office, 402 patients are hospitalized, 215 of them in the room and 187 in Intensive Care Units (ICU).

Don’t let your guard down

For this holiday bridge, the mayor’s office indicated that although the number of cases has remained stable, “with a slight downward trend,” recommends citizens continue to use the mask permanently, frequent washing and hand hygiene and avoid crowds.

In the same way, it suggests keeping preventive isolation, relating to due distancing (if possible only with family members) and take special care when sharing with the elderly and sensitive population.

“It is very important that we continue with our commitment, that we protect our older adults who are the most vulnerable to this virus. It is important to use a mask, keep your distance. At the first warning sign such as discomfort, cough or shortness of breath, call 123 or our insurers and that we make use of all the benefits that the health system brings us to face the pandemic in a timely manner, ”said Health Secretary Andree Uribe Montoya.

Similarly, if you plan to attend public establishments, it is mandatory to wear a mask, intensify hand hygiene and avoid close contact with other people.
