Seven people murdered in Betania (Antioquia) and five in Algeria (Cauca) is the preliminary report of these two new violent events. According to Indepaz, there are already 76 massacres that have occurred in 2020.

Two new massacres occurred between Saturday night and early Sunday morning in the municipalities of Betania (Antioquia) and Argelia (Cauca), leaving 12 victims for now. In the first case, preliminary reports show an incursion by armed men on a farm located in the village of La Julia in which seven coffee pickers were killed. Three other injured people were transferred to Medellín to be treated.

Carlos Mario Villada, mayor of Betania, confirmed the incident to local media and pointed out that the victims are not local residents. “Apparently the disputes over the places of vice in our municipality was what caused the massacre last night. Ten heavily armed men arrived at the farm and fired indiscriminately at 14 people who were staying there. Seven were killed and three injured. Everything obeys to the disputes by the places of vice ”, said.

The commander of the Army’s Seventh Division, General Juan Carlos Ramírez, said that “in the face of information about a violent event in Betania, Antioquia, Army troops are carrying out military operations in the area to protect the population. Police and Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the facts ”. The governor, Aníbal Gaviria, indicated that a security council will be held in the area to take the corresponding measures.

On the other hand, in Algeria (Cauca) the murder of five people was reported in the sector known as El Mango. According to the Farc party senator Sandra Ramírez, among the victims is Libio Chilito, leader of the Communal Action Board. Indepaz pointed out that with the massacres in Algeria and Betania, there are already 76 that are registered throughout 2020. The organization also indicated that with the death of Chilito, “256 leaders and human rights defenders were murdered in 2020.”
