The minimum wage in Colombia would be defined by decree and it is almost a fact that the parties will not reach an agreement. Based on this, a voice has emerged in recent days and it is that of businessman Mario Hernández, who ensures that workers should be paid better in 2021 to increase purchasing power and consumption.

So he let him see this Thursday on Blu Radio, where he proposed raise the minimum next year twice the inflation caused from November 2019 to 2020, which is close to 1.5%. In that sense, Mario Hernández’s proposal is that the increase be set at 3% for next year, that is, 26,334 pesos.

Although the difference is not much with what the businessmen propose, who do not want to go beyond 2%, equivalent to 17,550 pesos, for Hernández it is necessary to make an effort. He even says that his employees will raise their salary beyond the minimum wage and will give them help represented in markets and other benefits.

“Every year I have always agreed that you have to raise people’s purchasing power a little. They must be raised at least twice the inflation rate for people to improve their quality; we businessmen have a great opportunity and generate employment, “said Mario Hernández, on Blu Radio, and called on his fellow entrepreneurs to reinvent themselves and take advantage of the opportunities the pandemic offers.

He also asked that employment regulations be changed in Colombia so that people can work partially and that students can work in stores for hours, among other adjustments.

Hernández also does not agree that if the minimum wage is raised more in 2021, unemployment will increase, one of the arguments given by employers. On the contrary, he says, there are many opportunities.

“We have to reinvent ourselves, look what the Asians have done, but Colombia’s GDP is very low, and we continue with the same story and we do not reinvent ourselves. Politicians talk about taxes and do not talk about reinventing the country, ”insisted the businessman, on that same station.

Minimum wage 2021: Mario Hernández asks for it to be higher

Mario Hernández’s position is known after a recent column he wrote in Portafolio, in which he says that It is not “at all irresponsible” to bet on raising the minimum wage beyond the 2% offered by employers.

“The idea of raising a salary increase that allows people, particularly the poorest, to have additional compensation for the inflation caused,” said the businessman, in that same newspaper.

Minimum wage would be defined by decree in Colombia

This Thursday morning there will be a new meeting of the labor agreement table, which will try to reach an agreement to set the minimum wage. Otherwise, the increase will be set by President Iván Duque by decree, with a maximum deadline of December 30.

Today’s meeting will discuss the qualifications of the proposals presented by each of the parties and try to unblock the negotiation. Despite the low number offered by entrepreneurs, there are some who are inclined to raise the offer a bit.
