In 2015, Gustavo Petro brought the Argentine star to a “match for Peace,” but Maradona’s last match in Colombia ended in a confrontation.

The death of Diego Armando Maradona this Wednesday filled millions of world soccer fans with memories. The Villa Fiorito star, the son of Doña Tota, the “cosmic kite” of Víctor Hugo Morales, played in Colombia several times. Some of these matches were with the Albiceleste team, especially for the 1986 World Cup qualifiers in Mexico.

The last of his matches in our country, on April 10, 2015, was an invitation from the then mayor Gustavo Petro. At the time, PUBLIMETRO highlighted that some 8,000 people went to the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo to see the idol.

Maradona’s last game in Colombia featured stars from Millonarios and Santa Fe, against a team of “friends of Diego.” The game sought to support the peace process that was being carried out with the FARC in Havana, which was signed on November 30, 2016 at the Colón Theater.

On one side, Maradona was accompanied by great stars such as Faustino Asprilla, Freddy Rincón, Juan Pablo Ángel, Mauricio Serna and the Paraguayan Roberto Cabañas. The capital stars included Bonner Mosquera and Mario Vanemerak, as well as several players from the 1980s. As a curious fact, the then Millonarios manager Ricardo Lunari played with his compatriot.

Maradona’s last game in Colombia was not easy for 10, who seriously suffered the 2,600 meters of altitude of the city. The game ended 2-1, with goals from Mario Vanemerak, Sergio Galván and Maradona. In the last minute, the 1986 world champion scored a penalty charged so that he could celebrate against the Bogota citizens.

This celebration was stained because, while he was walking around to greet the fans present at the Estadio de Techo, he hit a fan who brought his cell phone too close to him in the middle of the crowd.

The Secretary of Government, Gloria Flórez, had to apologize on behalf of Maradona. According to the senior official, the Argentine’s aggression occurred because he felt very bad for playing at the height of Bogotá. “These events occurred and it is unfortunate that they overshadow the magnitude of the party and the behavior of the people,” he said.

Before Maradona’s last game in Colombia, Diego recalled the deprivations he experienced in his childhood, which motivated him to play these beneficial games. “When I was a child, I was hungry. There were many of us and the pot of food was not enough. I learned from my father that, if one day I became someone, I would not forget that. That is why when they call me to play games for Africa makes me want to play twice a day, so that those children can eat, ”said the 10th.
