Maduro acknowledges the Venezuelan exodus before the UN and blames the US – International

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, recognized this Wednesday in his speech at the UN General Assembly Venezuelan migration. His words caused surprise, because your government has long denied the exodus of Venezuelan citizens.

The blame for this situation was attributed to the United States. “As a direct consequence of the coercive, unilateral measures and the economic aggressions imposed by the US Government on our people, there has been, temporarily, a process of emigration of citizens, fundamentally for economic reasons,” Maduro said in a previously recorded broadcast.

The president also assured that Venezuela “faces a wave of voluntary returns” which, according to government figures, is around the 70,000, many of which come “from countries with very high levels of contagion” of covid-19 such as Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile or Brazil.

That return, in his opinion, is based on several reasons, among which he cited “the systematic violation of human rights, anachronistic and xenophobic policies” against migrants during the pandemic that forced them to return to their country of origin when they were left without employment and, therefore, without financial resources.

Faced with this situation, the opposition has denounced that the Government has prevented the return of thousands of Venezuelans, some of whom have been waiting for months in various countries for the Maduro government to authorize a flight that allows them to return.

Maduro hinted at corruption in attention to migrants

During his speech, the Venezuelan President questioned “what has been the reaction of the world that says it cares about Venezuela” to the situation of Venezuelans in the world and He hinted that there has been corruption among those in charge of serving them.

“We wonder (…), despite the huge amounts of dollars that have been given to these governments (of migrant-receiving countries) through extravagant donor-seeking conferences for Venezuelan migrants, what they did with that money,” he claimed.

And he added another question: “Did the governments steal it? We believe that we must rigorously review (…) the role that some United Nations agencies or some representatives of some agencies have been playing in these processes, such as the Office of the High Commissioner. of the United Nations for Refugees (Acnur) or the International Organization for Migration (IOM) “.

Again, as he did in his previous speeches, he denounced the sanctions imposed by the United States on Venezuela and vindicated the organization of a multipolar world in the face of the “alleged global dictatorship raised from the United States.”

As an example of such multilateral work, Maduro cited the World Health Organization (WHO) and its work during the pandemic.

“The WHO must be an example of multilateralism that we need to strengthen, the WHO must be an organization that acts and speaks faithfully, without bowing to pressure, extortion and attacks from the powerful, which confirms its moral authority, its scientific capacity and cooperation based on solidarity, “he concluded.

End to the denial stage of the exodus of Venezuelans

Until now, the Government of Venezuela had denied the process of exodus to other countries and even the president of the National Constituent Assembly (ANC), Diosdado Cabello, went so far as to affirm that the photos of migrants from various Latin American countries were “a montage. “.

“Doesn’t it seem suspicious to you that there are photos in Peru (of Venezuelans) walking along the side of the road? In Ecuador, in Colombia (…) it seems that this was lights, cameras, action. They get them off the buses, they don’t let them ride and they leave them anywhere, they have no choice (but to walk) and that’s the take they do“, affirmed the one considered like number two of the chavismo.

This time, although Maduro recognized the phenomenon of migration from his country, he did not mention any specific number of migrants who left due to the prolonged economic and social crisis that Venezuela is experiencing. However, the UN has established that at least 5 million people have had to leave that country in search of a better future.

In Colombia until June, the month of the last registration that Migración Colombia has, there were 1,748,716 Venezuelans in the country, but only 43.6% of them are in regular condition, that is, with up-to-date documents.
