From the Twitter account of the episcopate of Colombia, this Saturday morning, the name of the successor of Cardinal Rubén Salazar Gómez as archbishop of Bogotá, who had resigned three years ago, when he turned 75, as he is, was made official. norm in the Catholic Church.
The one chosen by Pope Francisco to assume this position, one of the most important in the hierarchy of the Colombian clergy, is the santandereano Luis José Rueda Aparicio, who had been serving as archbishop of Popayán.
The new head of Colombian Catholicism is 58 years old, born in San Gil and completed his first studies in the city of Popayán.
He was formed in the priesthood at the San Carlos Conciliar Seminary of the Diocese of Socorro and San Gil, where he studied philosophy; then he made his theological studies at the Archdiocesan Seminary of Bucaramanga.
“He is a weighted, balanced man, representing a commitment of Pope Francis to the continuity of Cardinal Salazar’s style. A style characterized by prudence and moderation, oblivious to extremes and therefore a man capable of building bridges of communion and understanding”Said Monsignor Pedro Mercado, president of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal of Bogotá.
“The Archbishop of Popayán has also been very active in the social field, he has great sensitivity for the poor and excluded. And he has denounced the situation of violence that exists in Cauca ”, added Mercado.
Vatican expert Hernán Olano, vice-rector of La Gran Colombia University, clarifies that Cardinal Rubén Salazar will leave his post as archbishop of Bogotá but not his dignity as a cardinal, the highest dignity that can be achieved in the Catholic Church.

And therefore Salazar will continue to be an active member of the College of Cardinals: organization that brings together the highest leaders of the Catholic Church in the world and where the name of each new Pope comes from when an election (conclave) takes place.
Salazar had resigned from his post three years ago, upon reaching the maximum age established by the Vatican to occupy this type of function (75 years), but Pope Francis himself asked him to remain in charge, taking into account his good health and the role he has been playing as leader of Catholicism in Colombia.
This pastor, simple, mystical and close, has a lot to give in his heart
Olano also clarifies that the arrival of Monsignor Rueda Aparicio to the Archdiocese of Bogotá does not immediately make him a cardinal. However, it is worth clarifying that the capital’s headquarters is a cardinal par excellence and that it has been run by cardinals. That means that, within a few months, he could be elevated to the dignity of cardinal.
“Excellent gift from the Holy Father to the Church of Colombia, naming for the Primacy of Bogotá, Cardinal Salazar’s successor, to the current Archbishop of Popayán. This pastor, simple, mystical and close, has in his heart a lot to give ”, Monsignor Darío Monsalve, Archbishop of Cali, celebrated on Twitter.
