Luis Gerónimo López can tell that he was champion both with Santa Fe with Millonarios, that, despite being Argentine, he was a player for the Colombian National Team, and that he also went through other big clubs in the country. The one born in Argentina, but with a Colombian heart, died this Thursday, at the age of 75.

López, born in Córdoba (Argentina), was fighting again against cancer that this time won the battle. He had already beaten it in 2008.

He arrived in Colombia in 1974 to play with Santa Fe, after having passed through River Plate, Argentinos Juniors, Celta de Vigo and Deportivo Municipal de Peru. The following year he was a fundamental figure for the Reds to win their sixth star.

In 1977 he went to Deportivo Pereira and that year he was summoned by coach Blagoje Vidinic to play the qualifying round for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, along with other nationalized Argentines: Jorge Amado and Jorge Ramón Cáceres.

From Pereira he went to Millonarios in 1978 and was also crowned champion with that club. In 1980 he went to Nacional for six months and then he was in Independiente Medellín, until the end of 1981.

He was already retired when Alonso ‘Cachaco’ Rodríguez, who had been his teammate in Santa Fe, called him to play for Quindío, a team in which he had assumed as DT in 1982. It was his last professional club.

After his retirement he was an important goalkeeper coach and trainer. The most prominent in his charge was Camilo Vargas, today the goalkeeper of the Atlas de México and the Colombian National Team.
