With the award to best urban music album for J. Balvin the central ceremony of the 2020 Latin Grammy Awards began. The Colombian dedicated this trophy to Colombia, the people of San Andrés and Providencia and “those who are suffering from the hurricane.” He added that “The world needs colors right now.”
As in the nominations, in which J Balvin swept the applications, the country had a bulky night of awards obtained by its artists. At the end, he added 13 statuettes.
The paisa reggaeton award – the most nominated in 2020 and the artist who received the most applications in the same year – was revealed, after an emotional tribute to Héctor Lavoe, in which Ricardo Montaner, Jesús Navarro, Víctor Manuel, Rauw Alejandro and Ivy Queen performed the song The Singer.
However, in a previous ceremony –the premier–, most of the statuettes had been delivered, including the first eight for Colombian talents.
The second trophy of the main ceremony also went to Colombia: With Song for Rubén, Carlos Vives and Rubén Blades won the golden gramophone in the category of best tropical song. From his home, accompanied by part of his production team, Vives thanked the award: “It is an honor to share this award with Rubén (…) thank you for joining the world of Cumbiana”, were some of his words. Vives also mentioned his solidarity with San Andrés y Providencia.
This was already Vives’ third triumph at the 2020 Latin Grammy. At the premiere, he had already won the statuettes for the best long video (for The Lost World of Cumbiana) and best tropical / contemporary fusion album (Cumbiana)
The most important awards, as usual, alternated with musical performances. One of the most sober, but no less emotional, was that of José Luis Perales, with his classic I love you or Lupita Infante’s tribute to his grandfather, the legendary Pedro Infante.
J Balvin appeared this time alone. Before the viewer public he interpreted the song Red.
The best singer-songwriter album went to Kany García for Table for two. And later Mike bay he won the award for best new artist. He received the Grammy with a declaration of love to his girlfriend, Greeicy, the woman who “changed his life.”
Julio Reyes Copello, as a producer of With you, by Alejandro Sanz, shared with the Spaniard the recording statuette of the year. And Camilo won for best pop song with Tutu.
The Puerto Rican René won the award for song of the year, for the song that bears his name and the album of the year was A song for Mexicoby Natalia Lafourcade.
Among the awards that our artists had accumulated before the television show were that of Álex Campos (best Christian music album), followed by the musician Carlos Fernando Lopez, in classical composition, for work Sacre, made in collaboration with José Valentino.
Also there, the first two Vives trophies were announced –which was ultimately the Colombian with the most trophies–, the award for Jorge Celedón, in best vallenato-cumbia album; the one with the group Niche, best salsa album (By 40), and the one they shared Cepeda and Fonseca for the album Compadres, which they recorded as a duet and celebrated it in the same way.
Others who celebrated as a duet were Andrés Torres and Mauricio Rengifo, the producer of the year award.
This was the premiere, before the television ceremony
In the premiere that preceded the television show of the largest Latin music party in the world, the president of the Latin Grammy, Gabriel Abaroa highlighted the decision to maintain the celebration of the Latin Grammy despite the crisis generated by the pandemic, as one more sample of the strength of music.
“We had to stay strong because of our music,” Abaroa said. He also highlighted that in this 2020 registration records were broken: more than 18,000 productions, of which the nominees came first and, now, the winners.
Although there were some musical interventions, at the premiere the awards ceremony was rather quick – 45 of the 53 trophies were distributed.
During this first part of the awards, the categories of regional Mexican music were awarded. Los Tigres del Norte, for example, took home the award for best northern music album. For her part, Natalia Lafourcade also won another of these awards.
As the awards became known, some of the artists who were connected to the ceremony had the opportunity to share their thanks. They did so, precisely the Tigres del Norte and, later, Cultura Propética, among others.
“Compadre, we won compadre”, was the first thing they said Fonseca and Cepeda, connected to the broadcast, each from different locations, when the best pop vocal album for their joint work Compadres..

Best salsa album: 40, Niche group.
Best cumbia / vallenato album: I keep singing to love, Jorge Celedón and Sergio Luis Rodríguez.
Best Bachata Merengue Album: Now, Eddy Herrera and Larimar Daniel Santacruz (it was a tie).
Best album of traditional tropical music. Icon, Aragon Orchestra.
Best Contemporary / Tropical Fusion Album: Cumbiana, by Carlos Vives.
Best Folk Album: A cappella Susana bacca
Best flamenco music album: Flamenco without borders. Antonio Rey.
