With the award to best urban music album for J. Balvin the central ceremony of the 2020 Latin Grammy Awards began. The Colombian dedicated this trophy to Colombia, the people of San Andrés and Providencia and “those who are suffering from the hurricane.” He added that “The world needs colors right now.”

The paisa reggaeton award -the most nominated of 2020 and the artist who received the most applications in the same year- was awarded, shortly after an emotional tribute to Héctor Lavoe, in which Ricardo Montaner, Jesús Navarro, Victor Manuel, Rauw Alejandro and Ivy Queen performed the song The Singer together.

However, when this award was presented, already in a previous ceremony -the premier-, during the afternoon, most of the statuettes had been delivered, including the first eight for Colombian artists.

The second trophy of the night also went to Colombia: With Song for Rubén, Carlos Vives and Rubén Blades won the golden gramophone in the category of best tropical song. From his home, accompanied by part of his production team, Vives thanked the award: “It is an honor to share this award with Rubén (…) thank you for joining the world of Cumbiana”, were some of his words. Vives also mentioned his solidarity with San Andrés y Providencia.

This was already Vives’ third triumph at the 2020 Latin Grammy, since at the premiere it had already won the statuettes for best long video and best tropical fusion / contemporary album.

This was the premiere, before the television ceremony

In the premiere that preceded the television show of the largest Latin music party in the world, the president of the Latin Grammy, Gabriel Abaroa highlighted the decision to maintain the celebration of the Latin Grammy despite the crisis generated by the pandemic, as one more sample of the strength of music.

“We had to stay strong because of our music,” Abaroa said. He also highlighted that in this 2020 registration records were broken: more than 18,000 productions, of which the nominees came first and, now, the winners.

Although there were some musical interventions, at the premiere the awards ceremony was rather quick – 45 of the 53 trophies were distributed – and the first of these – as would happen hours later on the television show, would be for a Colombian: Alex Campos, with the album solados he won the award for best Christian music album.

In the category of best contemporary classical music composition, the award went to Sacre, a composition of the Colombian Carlos Fernando Lopez in a joint work with José Valentino. So in the first minutes, the Colombian artists already added two statuettes.

During this first part of the awards, the categories of regional Mexican music were awarded. Los Tigres del Norte, for example, took home the award for best northern music album. For her part, Natalia Lafourcade also won another of these awards.

As the awards became known, some of the artists who were connected to the ceremony had the opportunity to share their thanks. They did so, precisely the Tigres del Norte and, later, Cultura Propética, among others.

“Compadre, we won compadre”, was the first thing they said Fonseca and Cepeda, connected to the broadcast, each from different locations, when the best pop vocal album for their joint work Compadres.

Another Colombian whose emotion when winning was seen live was Jorge Celedón, winner in the Vallenata music category. Accompanied by his manager, Celedón gave his brief speech of thanks to his parents, God and the vallenato family. Later, more awards were announced for national artists: Niche won Best Traditional Tropical Album, with 40 ‘ Y Carlos Vives, with Cumbiana, won Best Tropical Fusion / Contemporary Album.

For the second time in history, Colombia won the award of producer of the year, from the hand of Andrés Torres & Mauricio Rengifo, an award that in 2002 went to Kike Santander. Once this award was announced, the ceremony prior to the television show was closed, in which the most important awards of the night will be awarded.

The Colombian balance, so far is quite good, eight awards before the show begins is a high number if compared to what was obtained in previous years.
