Shock and sadness caused the death of Jenaro Pérez Gutiérrez in Antioquia, a recognized business leader who founded the Colanta dairy company.

Pérez Gutiérrez, died on the morning of this Sunday, September 6 for causes that have not yet been known.

The businessman was General Manager of Colanta for 43 years until November 2016, when he retired.

Voices from the Antioquia political and business sector lamented the death of the man who became the only leader who for four decades has led the dairy sector in Colombia.

Jenaro Pérez was born in Entrerríos, north of Antioquia and has lived all his life among cows. Those who know him say he couldn’t go 15 minutes without mentioning this bovine.

She grew up on her father’s two farms with about 40 cattle, helping to milk cows before going to school. One of the farms received it as an inheritance after the death of her father and later she ended up buying the cattle from her mother and brother.

He studied at the National University of Colombia and graduated as a veterinarian and zootechnician.

He who does not do politics suffers it

In 1973, before joining the then Cooperativa Coolechera, which had suffered three bankruptcies in less than 10 years, Pérez had served as Secretary of Agriculture of Antioquia, director of the Center for Veterinary Diagnosis of the Colombian Zooprophylactic Institute, and professor of the University of Antioquia.

He also dabbled in politics. He was a councilor of Medellín, a deputy of the Departmental Assembly of Antioquia for several periods, and a councilor in about ten municipalities in the North of Antioquia. In addition, he was a representative to the Chamber until the Constituent Assembly of 1991.

“He who does not do politics suffers it,” he used to say.
