Marina Arzuaga Mejía, better known as ‘La Maye’, the woman who played a leading role in the creative sensibility of maestro Rafael Escalona, passed away on Tuesday afternoon in Valledupar.
His demise It occurred after suffering from lung problems for several weeks.

“He had respiratory problems, kidney complications,” said Franklin Martínez, a close friend of the Escalona family.
Marina Arzuaga was 92 years old, she was married for several years to the late Vallenato composer Rafael Escalona, from whose union six children were born: Juan José, Ada Luz, Rafael, Rosa María, Margarita and Perla.

‘La Maye’ was part of Escalona’s musical work, many considered her the idyllic muse of the teacher, since the lyrics that came out of him they appropriated their nature and the romance that held them together for several years.
“You know mi maye how it hurts / That I go and you stay / What I don’t want is to see you jealous / What I don’t want is to see you cry“.
“Definitely, Escalona immortalized her with her verses and songs, like so many other characters who also inspired this folklore” Martinez said.
So far, the church where his funeral will be held is unknown.
