It is for this reason that only cargo and public passenger transport vehicles can circulate on the road leading to the new La Línea tunnel. between 6:00 am and 2:00 pm, while individuals must move through Alto de Letras, since the traffic of cars and motorcycles is totally restricted.
“The upper part of the mountain continues to generate risks of landslides, we have already accessed with our operational capacity and we have control of that part. Now we hope to evacuate and remove the landslide, ”said Invías director, Juan Esteban Gil.
And added that “We continue with the risk that if the rains occur in great magnitude and saturate the slope, it could fall naturally. It is a stabilization work that will take at least two months ”.
This is a very difficult mountain range, historically problems have been generated and landslides have occurred on the road all our lives
The Quindian engineer and president of the La Línea tunnel oversight, Uriel Orjuela, explained that the current emergency is the product of “A phenomenon of mass movement that has existed all our life on the road and that is impacting the current road and the works that are carried out there”.
The landslide occurred in the sector known as La Paloma, in Tolima and does not affect the structures of the Darío Echandía de tunnel. 8.6 kilometers in length or the short tunnels ‘Oso de Anteojos’, ‘Los Colibríes’ and ‘Barranquero’.

“It is necessary to manage infiltration water and surface runoff water to be able to stop the movement of the mountain and guarantee not only the stability of the works but also the safety of road users, especially in the open-air road area, which is perhaps the most vulnerable part ”, Orjuela said.
The engineer added that “the excess water product of the rains in recent days has accelerated the processes of mass movements and this has in check the mobility of the road. This is a very difficult mountain range, historically problems have been generated and landslides have occurred on the road all our lives ”.

Finally, Orjuela recommended “rather than making retaining walls, in my view, the water that has infiltrated the mountain has to be drained, and I have already given these recommendations to the director of Invías and the engineers.”
