On Friday, November 13 the The second court for the execution of sentences endorsed the request for a 72-hour permit for the former minister of agriculture Andrés Felipe Arias, which would allow him to study or work.

Last Wednesday, November 11, the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (Inpec) had granted Arias’s request for an exit permit, Request that Arias had placed on November 6 in the judicial registry of the Court in charge of monitoring the fulfillment of his sentence of 17 years, in the case of Agro Ingreso Seguro.

As long as the convicted person has shown good behavior, there is no risk of flight and one third of the sentence imposed has been served, that is, 5.7 years, the permission granted for release from prison for 72 hours allows Arias to study or to work.

The convicted person has been deprived of liberty at the cavalry school in the North Canton since July 12, 2019 after being extradited by US authorities. The high court found him responsible for the crimes of embezzlement for appropriation in favor of third parties and undue interest in the conclusion of contracts.

It should be remembered that Andrés Felipe Arias tried to escape his conviction in Colombia and traveled to the United States, after which that country accepted the extradition request of the Colombian justice. Between the time he was detained in the United States and Colombia, he has already served more than five and a half years in detention.

Although in recent days, the Prosecutor’s Office asked the Supreme Court of Justice to maintain the sentence imposed, it must be borne in mind that this is not the first request presented by Arias’s defense to seek some benefit. Some time ago he tried to get justice to validate the sentence he spent in the United States to request benefits such as house for jail or parole. Both were denied.

Andrés Felipe Arias was sentenced by the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice to 17 years in prison and to the payment of a financial penalty of 30,000 million pesos for his responsibility in the Agro Ingreso Seguro (AIS) scandal. In the investigation, Arias was found responsible for the crimes of entering into contracts without complying with the legal requirements and embezzlement due to appropriation in favor of third parties.
