Vilma Jay, the correspondent for Noticias Caracol in San Andrés,
has been tirelessly covering the disaster that caused the hurricane Iota
in the archipelago, but it is also one of those affected.
Several of his relatives live in Providencia, which was hit the hardest by the inclement cyclone, and they were trapped on the island. After days of waiting, they managed to board a humanitarian flight and reach Saint Andrew
to meet with the reporter.
“It is a complete desert, there are no houses, there are no shelters, we are all wearing the same clothes since the day the hurricane passed. We honestly did not know that they would be able to get us out in time to be able to ensure the well-being of our children, ”said a relative of Vilma.
Given the magnitude of the disaster in Providencia, he said that people have been looting everything in search of food.
“There are moms who are with small children, who are looking for a way out, but – understandably – we can’t all at the same time”added.
The relatives arrived together with dozens of people at the Gustavo Rojas Pinilla airport and there they were finally reunited with Vilma Jay, who not only thanked for having managed to see them again, but also sent a message of encouragement to the victims
they have not yet been rescued.
“I want to thank God because they are here and a lot of strength for those who have not arrived yet. The aid is already arriving and they will come for you too ”, The journalist said almost through tears from the emotion of the reunion.
Fortunately, the relatives of the Noticias Caracol correspondent in San Andrés are safe and sound.
“It is a reality that they are here with us and I feel much more secure and calm, I say this as Vilma Jay, the first cousin, the citizen”, he concluded.
