Thus, the number of agents around Joe Biden will increase, the Washington Post reported on Friday, when the Democratic candidate for the White House appeared to be closer to victory in the US elections.
The Secret Service will reinforce its staff in Wilmington, Delaware, after Biden’s campaign team told that federal agency that will be held at the Wilmington Convention Center, the city where your candidate lives, and that he could deliver an important speech there this Friday.
The federal agency protected Biden when he was vice president, and again since last March according to CNN, when he won his party’s presidential primaries.
This protection is common for candidates for the White House. It is not as imposing as the device that works for the president himself, but it becomes similar if the candidate wins the elections and becomes the “elected president”, until his inauguration on January 20.
The decision is made amid uncertainty about the results of the presidential elections, which continued to keep the United States in suspense this Friday, subject to counting in five key states where the difference in votes is very tight to declare a winner.
Currently, Biden has between 253 or 264 votes – due to the uncertainty of the results in Arizona, with 11 electoral votes – and Republican President Donald Trump, who is seeking a second term, has 214.
Alaska’s three electoral votes have yet to be awarded, but no Democrat has won in decades in this state, and there is little doubt about the outcome in favor of Trump. Here’s how things stand in the five key states:
Arizona
In this state bordering Mexico there are 11 electoral votes at stake.
Biden led the count with 50.1% of the votes compared to 48.5% for Trump, with a margin of 47,000 votes, with 90% of the votes counted.
The Fox News chain and the US press agency The Associated Press (AP) attributed the victory to the Democrat on Tuesday night, estimating that it was impossible for Trump to regain ground.
But other media such as The New York Times and CNN preferred to wait to finalize a winner in this state that traditionally votes Republican.
Georgia
In Georgia there are 16 electoral votes at stake.
98% of the votes have been counted in this southeastern state that has voted Republican since 1996.
Trump’s advance has continued to wane since Tuesday and Biden came to the fore on Thursday night. The Democrat has 1,096 more votes than Trump, tying them with 49.4% of the vote each.
Nevada
Nevada (west) contributes 6 electoral votes.
89% of the votes have already been counted in this desert state that elected Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 elections.
Biden currently leads with 49.4% of the vote against Trump’s 48.5%, representing a difference of less than 11,500 votes.
Pennsylvania
In Pennsylvania, with 20 electoral votes, 95% of the ballots were counted.
The two candidates campaigned fiercely in this industrial state located in the so-called “rust belt” area in the northeast of the country.
Trump started Tuesday night with a comfortable lead that has narrowed as mail-in votes are counted, although he remains ahead of Biden by about 18,000 votes (49.5% and 49.2%, respectively).
The likely dominance of Democratic ballots among those mailed and uncounted will likely tilt the outcome in favor of the Democrat, according to US media.
North Carolina
In North Carolina, a traditionally Republican southeastern state, 95% of the ballots have been counted and 15 electoral votes are at stake.
At the moment Trump has the advantage with 50.0% against Biden’s 48.6%, which represents a margin of about 77,000 votes.
But here, correspondence votes sent no later than Election Day – Tuesday, November 3 – are accepted if they arrive within nine days.
