Everything indicates that Javier Francisco Parra Cubillos, regional coordinator of the Cormacarena environmental corporation, was assassinated for fulfilling his task of protecting the natural resources of the Sierra de La Macarena, especially Caño Cristales, the emblematic tourist site that in May 2018 was attacked by unknown persons who set fire to a newly built cabin for visitors.

A friend who had known him for 28 years says that Pacho, as his friends called him, all he did was comply with environmental regulations. Was that the reason they took your life? “Yes,” the woman replied.

There is no other reason. “He was very quiet, I always scold him because he was passive, very relaxed. I told him ‘Pacho, I looked at such a thing’, and he laughed. He didn’t fight with anyone. It was always like that, I knew him since we were young, when he was my sister’s classmate at school, “says the woman who asks not to reveal her name.

Pedro, his older brother, also has the suspicion that Pacho was killed for defending natural resources. “He was very quiet, very shy and if he had problems he would not comment to anyone, even though a few months ago he had some misunderstanding that he brought to the attention of the Prosecutor’s Office,” he says.

Two years ago, in the la Cachivera village, unknown persons set fire to the cabin of the visitor center in Caño Cristales, recently built in wood, in the development of an agreement between National Parks, Cormacarena and Fontur.

“We are three brothers Pedro Antonio, Javier Francisco and Johana. I am the oldest and it took a year for Pacho, who finished his degree in agriculture at the University of Los Llanos (Unillanos), did internships in Cormacarena in 1993, and since then he has been linked to that entity “, says Pedro Antonio .

That was the only job he had. He was always dedicated to the defense of the environment and natural resources and I had already been like three or four years regional coordinator of La Macarena and was between Villavicencio, Granada and Villavicencio. In addition, it was in charge of giving permits to tour operators for visits to Caño Cristales.

The director of Cormacarena, Andrés Felipe García Céspedes, deeply regretted the death of this exemplary and hardworking man, who rather than being an official became a true promoter and staunch defender of the department’s natural resources.

He had been working for the environmental corporation in the defense of Caño Cristales and the ecosystems of the municipality of La Macarena for more than 20 years. Her friend says she was a nature lover, she loved landscapes, taking photos and was an excellent co-worker who she never saw hot-tempered.

This Thursday, at 7:00 in the morning, in front of Cormacarena’s office in La Macarena, a couple of thugs who were mobilizing on a motorcycle fired three shots at him, which left him seriously injured.

And so he passed away, while preparations were being made to transfer him, by air, to a medical center in Villavicencio, the man who always smiled at life, who never fought with anyone and that he fought to protect the ecosystems of the Serranía de La Macarena park, including the emblematic river of the seven colors.
