The United States on Friday declassified an explosive intelligence report that reveals that the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohamed bin Salman, authorized to “capture or kill” Jamal Khashoggi, a US-based journalist whose death sparked outrage.

In the report (which is two years old), released by the government of President Joe Biden, US intelligence concluded that the prince “approved an operation in Istanbul, Turkey, to capture or kill Saudi journalist Jamal.

“The public disclosure (of the report) will mark a new chapter in US relations with Saudi Arabia, and a clear difference in the policy of President Joe Biden and that of former President Donald Trump, “said the NBC television network, who said they already had access to the report in 2018.

On the other hand, this Wednesday, the White House spokeswoman, Jane Psaki, said that the Biden Government will communicate the conclusions to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, rather than his son, and President Biden later confirmed that he had read the document.

Who was Khashoggi?

Khashoggi, 59, worked as a columnist for the American newspaper The Washington Post when it came for a procedure at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul (Turkey), on October 2, 2018.

There, according to US sources, he was assassinated by Saudi Arabian agents. His body was dismembered and the remains have never been found.

The Saudi Government initially denied any responsibility for the murder of Khashoggi, but later claimed that the journalist was accidentally killed by agents seeking to extradite him.

The official version of Saudi Arabia is that those agents, closely linked to Prince Bin Salman, acted on their own and that the ruler was not involved.

In Saudi Arabia, eight individuals were convicted of Khashoggi’s death and five of them were sentenced to death.
