In a dialogue with Vicky Dávila for Semana magazine, J Balvin, the most internationally prominent Colombian artist at the time, gave details about how he copes with depression and his professional success. Despite the intimate and personal tint of the interview, the singer and the journalist were given time to talk about politics and for Balvin to give his opinion on some politicians in the country.

The singer affirmed that he is not a fan of politics, but assured: “When I feel like I have to talk about politics, because I have the responsibility, I do it.” In addition, he said it was considered a “Social leader” because many people are waiting to know what you think.

About how the country is doing, Balvin does not feel able to answer the question because he says he does not know much information. However, it clarifies that the generation of young people with “A very clear vision” it keeps you optimistic about global news.

“Do you admire a politician in Colombia?” When asked, the paisa did not give names of decisive figures in national politics and said he only admired “The strength they have and the mental strength in general to hold so much stick.”

When the singer was questioned about whether or not he likes the Government, Balvin accepted that the people repeatedly demonstrate against and “It depends on the reality of each person.”

“If I take over the people and understand the people, I know that many are not liking it”, he confessed and, later in the interview, added his support for the peaceful march. “I have no problem with people leaving for what they need and for their rights. What I do not agree with is violence in any way, be it for the reason that they are fighting, and part and parcel of both those who protect the people and the people who go.

Regarding Colombian President Iván Duque, Balvin said that he was a “Bacán”, without giving more details. The same answer he gave when asked by former President Uribe:“Bacán”.

In December 2019, the paisa met with President Duque to “Talk, listen and build common goals.” In a video, shared by the high councilor for communications, Hassan Nassar, they can be seen hugging.

When he got to the former president Juan Manuel Santos, the paisa answered the question with silence, as when he was questioned about Gustavo Petro, a former presidential candidate.

Upon reaching the moderates, he was asked about Sergio Fajardo, for which he replied: “I don’t know him well.” However, the paisa had a favorable response to the mayor of Bogotá, Claudia Lopez, whom you consider a “Tesa”.

The Depression

According to the paisa interpreter, 2020 has been one of the best years in the professional field, and he reiterated to Dávila that staying as one of the most important exponents of the genre is not easy.

Balvin explained that the talent of other artists also shines and that many have positioned themselves as favorites in the last year. However, the singer of ‘Mi Gente’ managed to be the Colombian most listened to on the platforms of transmission and consider that “It is a great blessing to continue connecting with the public and with the world in a different way.”

Despite the success, the singer suffers from a disease that has afflicted him for almost a decade. At the beginning of November, Balvin admitted to his followers that he suffered “Anxiety and a little depression.” After the announcement, The singer’s relatives spoke out in support of the fight against the mental condition and showed that it is not shameful to go through episodes of this type.

According to the last testimony of the singer, he is better but “Not yet 100 percent, although I want to be.” In addition, he affirms that behind the artist who appears before thousands of people in the most prestigious stages of the world there is a person “Who suffers, cries, laughs, has aspirations, has dreams, disappointments. I am a human being like any other with many mistakes ”.

To help himself, Balvin says he leans on his healthy habits. “I go in the judicious process with the medicine, with the exercise, with the good habits that I have always had. The truth is, I have never had a lifestyle that allows me to hurt myself, but, on the contrary, allows me to improve faster ”, explained to the magazine, but he added that, sometimes, time is eternal in what he calls “darkness”.

The paisa defines moments of darkness as one of great sadness and frustration. Despite having to overcome these stages, Balvin assures that he is aware of “The sensations and tricks that my mind plays when there is a chemical imbalance”.

A surprising memory the singer shared was that when he won the Grammy for his album ‘Colores’, 20 days ago, he claimed that it was difficult to pretend to be happy. “Receiving an award wanting to get off and go cry, and lock up, are missions that are not for everyone. It is bad ”.

Medications and death

According to the Antioqueño, at first he thought that his education and what his parents taught them was enough to be able to cope with his situation. According to her testimony, there came a time when she had to humbly acknowledge that professional help is needed.

“It helped me to have a psychiatrist and to be medicated. It was very difficult to accept being medicated. Thank God there is technology, thank God there is a way to balance the chemicals and allow everything to go back to its place with patience ”, said the singer, who later added that the psychiatric drug does not make people who must take it less.

During the interview, they also spoke about those who do not survive the difficult mental illness. According to Balvin, this happens when a person has no one to tell them that there is an option to get out of depression. For this reason, the Antioqueño believes that “You can save many lives when you talk about it. So be it for someone to be more tolerant in the situation of a friend, a brother or a family member ”.

In the case of the singer, the thoughts of death would not carry them out, but they are always present. “When you are aware of those thoughts, you don’t normally execute them. But there are days when one says that I want to die, that one wonders what happens if I die or if they just turn me off “, The Colombian assures that he is not afraid to say it because he always comes out of it with faith that everything will return to normal.

Your contagion of COVID-19

In August of this year, the urban music singer announced his positive for COVID-19. According to his testimony, the symptoms were strong and the singer assured “lose the hope” at a point in his respiratory illness where he thought he was going to be hospitalized. Despite the difficulty, he managed to get out of the disease and warned his followers of the dangers of the new Coronavirus. “Recovery is slow, it is for warriors, really”, highlighted during the interview.
