Maira Páez, wife of Jaider Fonseca, killed by 4 shots, demanded from the national government that there be justice and that the full weight of the law falls on the Police. “My husband’s thing was not a stray bullet, there were 4 shots, they shot him,” said the woman.
Páez also stated that President Iván Duque and the National Police should be present at the event, asking for forgiveness and acknowledging the act that occurred.
Brian Baquero, Angie Baquero’s brother, asked for justice to be done, “because we know that there are many acts that have gone unpunished and we don’t want the same to happen with the families.”
“We have lost a person that we will not be able to see anymore, who leaves a great emptiness in our hearts. We ask for the collaboration of justice, the mayor, the president so that justice is done and so that we can bury our loved ones as they deserve ”, said the young man.
Flor Alcira Peralta and Constanza Chaparro, mothers of two young people wounded by firearms, also spoke at the event and demanded that the justice system and the authorities not forget their families.
The pardon of the Mayor
The mayor of Bogotá, Claudia López, began the event by apologizing to the families of the victims and all the injured, since it is the function of state authorities to prevent events like this from happening.
“Today we are here to apologize to all the victims of police abuse, to all the victims and citizens injured and killed in these events. Today we are here to recognize the seriousness of what happened, ”said the mayor.
López apologized to the families because, he said, the events occurred despite all instructions not to use firearms against the protesters.
“To all young people and citizens we offer forgiveness to all families, because despite all the instructions we could not avoid this tragedy and therefore a process of institutional recognition and improvement is required,” said López.
The mayor expressed her condolences to the families of Jaider Fonseca, 17 years old and father of a family; Julieth Ramírez, 18 years old; Fredy Mahecha, a young man of 20; Germán Puentes, 25 years old; Cristian Hernández; 26 years old; Angie Baquero, 19; Andrés Rodríguez, 23 years old, and Julián González, 27 years old.
The president also expressed her pain and support for the families of Maria del Carmen Viuvche, the 44-year-old woman who died after being hit by a bus that was stolen, and the relatives of Cristian Hurtado and Lorwam Mendoza, killed in the demonstrations in Soacha .
“We offer our condolences, we know how irreparable their pain and loss are, but we are here to reiterate to each mother, each father, each family member that the Mayor’s Office will accompany them so that there is truth about what happened and justice regarding individual responsibilities and institutional ”, were the words of the president.
For the mayor, this event to “recognize the seriousness of what happened, admit that this should not happen, honor the pain of the victims and their families is the first essential step to build a peace and justice process that enables one of reconciliation. ”.
The celebration also featured the participation and prayers of Monsignor Jaime Alberto Mancera and Emilio Roa, part of the Church of God Ministerial de Jesus Christ International.
Present at the event were the president of the Truth Commission, Father Francisco de Roux, the high commissioner for peace, Miguel Ceballos, and the presidential adviser for Human Rights, Nancy Patricia Gutierrez.
As part of the day of forgiveness and reconciliation there will also be a concert and an exhibition by cultural and artistic groups, scheduled for 3 pm
In addition, citizens are invited to a candlelight and a cacerolazo from their homes to honor the memory of the victims and reject the events that occurred in the capital in the last week.
