In a statement through Facebook, the mayor took stock of the acts of violence that have occurred in recent days in the city. She pointed out that 72 people injured by firearms and ten dead have been registered.

“It is the most serious thing that has happened to Bogotá since the taking of the Palace of Justice. Ten deaths and 72 gunshot wounds is the most serious thing that has happened in Bogotá since the taking of the Palace of Justice, it is also evidence that there are some members of the National Police who do not comply with the Constitution or the instructions, ”said López.

He indicated that he recognizes the legitimate indignation and protest of the citizens, but there were vandalism and criminal acts.

“15 Transmilenio buses are not burned by exalted youths, nor are more than 45 CAIs of our city burned and vandalized out of outrage, but rather by criminal hands.”

Investigation

The local president said that in the meeting she held this Friday with President Iván Duque and Attorney Fernando Carrillo, she gave them a video collected in the last 48 hours in which uniformed men are seen shooting at citizens.

“I gave them the about an hour and a half of video that we have where it clearly shows members of the public force firing indiscriminately in different neighborhoods of the city, where uniformed police officers or police trying to hide their uniform or alleged members are shown of the Police, but in civilian clothes, shooting ”.

He also said that he delivered “119 documented complaints from citizens who claim to have been victims of aggression or police abuse.”

He also asked the president to order that those who used their weapons indiscriminately be identified and removed from the police, and that the Attorney General’s Office take preferential control of the investigation.

“The president told me that today he had ordered a collation of which members of the Police had used their weapons in the last 48 hours, under what circumstances, and that he would give us that information as soon as possible.”

He added that, in order to guarantee truth and justice, a separate independent body that is separate from the National Police is necessary. “That it really establish the truth of what happened, the responsibilities and impose the corresponding sanctions and that body is the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation.”

Proposal to reform the Police

The mayor asked the police for a structural reform. She stated that what has happened in recent days is the consequence of years of impunity.

“The President of the Republic told me that he did not consider that a legal, constitutional reform should be made to the Police.”

López explained that the reform he is talking about is so that the Police have neither training nor operation nor military jurisdiction, “but rather a civil body that responds to the public and to the ordinary justice system.”

He asserted that, although the Colombian president ruled out the proposal, the attorney general will examine the probability of convening an inter-institutional commission to propose the reform to Congress.
