Iota: the amount that congressmen will donate to hurricane victims in San Andrés and Providencia – Congress – Politics

The devastation left by Hurricane Iota in its passage through San Andrés and Providencia last weekend has awakened the solidarity of Colombians, who have begun to make donations of different kinds.

Likewise, civil organizations and relief agencies, such as the Red Cross, set up accounts so that citizens can make their donations to these territories, where they need from construction materials to food and basic necessities.

This wave of solidarity was joined in the last hours by the Congress of the Republic. In separate sessions, the Plenary of the Senate and the House approved that the legislators hand over part of their salary to help the victims.

On the sides of the Senate, the decision was that each legislator receive a discount of two million pesos from their next payment. In this way, if it is taken into account that there are 108 senators, this corporation would be donating 216 million pesos.

Meanwhile, in the House of Representatives, the decision was for each representative to donate the equivalent of one day’s salary, that is, just over a million pesos. In this corporation there are 172 representatives, so the donated figure could reach 210 million pesos.

That is to say, Congressmen will donate just over 400 million pesos for those affected by this tragedy.
