Colombia successfully carried out this Saturday the first international pilot flight that marks the start of the air reopening with an aircraft that landed at the Cartagena de Indias airport from Fort Lauderdale, United States, after six months of restriction by covid-19.

Regarding this flight, the Colombian president, Iván Duque, highlighted the reestablishment of this commercial activity and valued the biosecurity measures from the Rafael Núñez airport, in Cartagena, a pole of national and international tourism in Colombia.
“Today is a very important milestone. We have seen how today the
international flights to Colombia and the city of Cartagena begins as the host of that first international flight “said the head of state, referring to Airbus 321, with 229 passengers, of Spirit airline.

The mayor of Cartagena, William Dau, was optimistic about the reactivation of the
international flights because it allows the recovery of the tourism sector.
“There is a lot of optimism. The truth is that we are very happy that Cartagena is the first city to have international flights. It is a very clear message that the National Government is giving us to support tourism in Cartagena“Dau told reporters.

They start on Monday
The Colombian Government authorized last Tuesday the gradual reopening of flights
international starting next September 21 from four cities, after a suspension of almost six months due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The first flights will link Colombia with the United States, Ecuador, Mexico, Bolivia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala, said the Minister of Transportation, Angela María Orozco.
“As of September 19 in the city of Cartagena flights are restored
international origin and destination, and as of September 21 there will be a gradual reactivation “, said Minister Orozco.
For this phase, the El Dorado airports in Bogotá; Alfonso Bonilla Aragón, from Cali; José María Córdova, from Medellín, and Rafael Núñez, from Cartagena.
International flights were suspended in the country on March 23, but because coronavirus infections have dropped, the Government enabled the plan to give air to this commercial activity. To make this decision, the authorities took into account three criteria: the authorization of international flights in other countries, the operating capacity of the airports and the commercial interest of the airlines.

The Colombian health authorities reported this Saturday that the country accumulates 758,398 infections of Ccovid-19 and that 24,039 people have died from the cause of the pandemic.
