Deportivo Independiente Medellín fell 0-1 with Boca Juniors in play for the fourth date of group H in the 2020 Copa Libertadores. The ‘powerful’ managed to maintain a certain order in defense, but at the end he missed the point with a goal from Eduardo Salvio and he was left with no options to advance in the continental competition. After advancing in two previous phases, the Antioqueños were prisoners of their lack of goal.

The first minutes were intense, with Medellín retracted, while Boca Juniors little by little dominated the ball and the offensive actions. At minute 4, a foul by Jesús David Murillo on Carlos Tevez close to the area, the victim charged, but the ball bounced off the barrier and led to a corner kick.

Averaging 15 minutes, Medellín took control of the ball and hurt the visitor on the wings, making precise touches and looking for Leonardo Castro, who could not distance himself from the opposing defenses. At minute 17, the first chance of the game came for Boca Juniors after an advance in speed by Carlos Tévez, who when he was about to kick was managed to contain Walter Rodríguez, but left the rebound to Eduardo Salvio, who finished off with his right leg and the ball was it was diverted from the arch guarded by Andrés Mosquera Marmolejo.

At minute 25, Walter Rodríguez knocked down Franco Soldano near the area, a minute later Tevez charged, but the ball hit the barrier. Boca regained control of the game, but was imprecise when defining the last play. Medellín was a shorter team compared to previous games and rarely did they look bad in defense.

At minute 32 and after a race with Jesús Murillo, Boca Juniors’s Gonzalo Maroni had a discomfort in his right leg and had to leave the court, giving way to Agustín Obando. The party went up in revolutions and in a couple of minutes, Carlos Zambrano and Andrés Cadavid were reprimanded. The last minutes of the first half were with control of the ball in both teams and little depth.

In the complementary stage, Aldo Bobadilla made two changes; Carlos Monges and Edwin Mosquera entered for Israel Escalante and José Estupiñán. For part of the visit, Franco Soldano withdrew and Walter Bou entered. At minute 4, Pol Fernández generated a new chance for Boca with a cross shot that passed near the right post of Andrés Mosquera Marmolejo.

The game had neither emotion nor fluidity after 15 minutes of play. Medellín kept crouching in his area, trying to regain control of the ball. At minute 17, Carlos Izquierdoz fouled Carlos Monges near the area. A couple of minutes later, Javier Reina charged, but the ball was deflected.

At minute 19, Juan Manuel Cuesta entered for Leonardo Castro, looking for a greater offensive weight in Medellín. Boca also made a change, entering Nicolás Capaldo instead of Jorman Campuzano. At minute 27 and after an overflow through the left sector of Obando, the ball was left to Carlos Tevez who finished off deflected over the local goal, a minute later, Capaldo finished from medium distance, but the ball was deflected again.

Medellín responded and at minute 30, Juan Manuel Cuesta finished across from the left sector, but the ball was deflected by centimeters. At minute 35, Edwin Cardona entered instead of Carlos Tevez and in the DIM, Yesid Díaz entered for Larry Angulo and Bayron Garcés entered for Walter Rodríguez.

At the end, at minute 43, an error by Didier Delgado, who handed the ball to Capaldo, who finished off the goal and after Marmolejo’s rebound, Eduardo Salvio entered the heart of the area and scored for the victory of the ‘xeneize’.

In the end, Medellín had two shots on goal throughout the game and although he was ordered in defense, he failed to keep zero in his goal and said goodbye to the Copa Libertadores, after having advanced two rounds to reach the group stage.

On the next date, Independiente Medellín visits Caracas in Venezuela, while Boca Juniors receives Libertad from Paraguay in Buenos Aires.
