In less than 20 minutes a group of seven detainees who were at the Copacabana Police Station escaped but were recaptured in the middle of an operation that required the intervention of the Army.

Héctor Monsalve Restrepo, municipal mayor, explained that 14 people were detained in the municipality and that around 8:20 p.m. This Monday a group of seven fled. The detainees damaged some bars and jumped through a wall located at the back of the station, which is located in the main park.

Several videos of the moments of tension experienced by the neighbors were broadcast on social networks. In one of them, two young people are seen jumping over a wall and walking on the terrace of the apartment, while others try to hide in a lot.

The rumor that there was a massive robbery was spread like wildfire by the people, but the mayor Monsalve denied that version and explained that in less than 20 minutes the recapture of all the fugitives was achieved.

“There was an immediate reaction from the Police that in less than 10 minutes closed a complete block and managed to capture them all again. There was a police helicopter and General Eliécer Camacho (metropolitan commander) deployed an operation with more than 350 men. The Army also arrived in a matter of minutes, “he explained.

General Camacho indicated that the station is located in a converted old house. “They managed to loosen the insurance on the fence, but they did not manage to go beyond the same block,” he said.

Monsalve reported that two men, said to be the masterminds of the escape, have already been transferred to a maximum security prison. Although there were some shots, the president reported that there were no injuries.

“My message to the people of Copacabana is that we can sleep peacefully. These people were controlled and public order has already been restored, ”he added.

Five of the seven captured were returned to the cells, where surveillance was reinforced. And all seven will be charged with the crime of prisoner escape, police sources reported.
