Since 2015, Spain and Portugal have passed a series of laws that seek to repair the Jewish communities that were expelled from their territories. According to data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the European Union, Colombia was the second country that sent the most applications to apply for both Portuguese and Spanish nationality. In total, Portugal received 153,774 applications, of which 8,388 were from Colombian citizens, of which 1,274 have already been granted the nationality of that country.

Although Spain set the deadline to apply for this immigration benefit on October 1, 2019, In the case of Portugal, the possibility is still valid and, for those who are approved, will have the opportunity to live and work in any of the 27 countries of the European Union. To begin the process, which lasts approximately two years, some requirements must be met, less demanding than those imposed by Spain.

Not have been convicted of a crime that has a prison term of three or more years

Demonstrate your connection with the Sephardic Jews of the Iberian Peninsula and comply with formal documentary requirements.

It is not necessary to know Portuguese, or take a knowledge test, or have traveled to Portugal.

In Colombia there are several companies that help with this process and are easily accessible through any Google search. Those in charge of this process verify the name of the applicant’s parents, who are their grandparents, great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents.
