What began as a citizen report via Twitter at 11:40 pm on December 24, ended in public outrage in the early hours of December 25: Ibagué, as well as the municipalities of Venadillo, Chaparral and Cajamarca on Twitter, are without electricity service, without the local authorities or the Celsia de Energía group having issued a statement in the hours after the reports.

It should be remembered that Ibagué faces a total confinement, scheduled from December 24 at 8 at night until next December 26 at 6 in the morning.

The blackout interrupted family celebrations that, according to Twitter reports, were being carried out normally, maintaining the biosecurity and social distancing measures required to face citizen confinement.

However, in the videos shared on different Twitter accounts, it is noted that some took advantage of the darkness for the indiscriminate use of gunpowder.

For these festivities, Ibagué is one of the preferred overland destinations for Colombians: according to media reports, the city faced traffic jams in the hours prior to confinement, by citizens who sought to take advantage of the warm temperatures of the Tolima capital.

The announcement of the local mayor’s office of the approval of Decree 0675 by which the city is ordered to enter a total confinement for two periods: from December 24 to 26, and from December 30 to January 2, was issued in the early hours of December 24 by the mayor Andrés Fabian Hurtado: “In Ibagué we take advantage of the measures announced by the Minister of Health, Fernando Ruiz. For Christmas there will be total confinement from December 24 at 8:00 pm to 5:00 am on Saturday December 26. In the next few hours, we will announce the respective decree ”, published the mayor on Twitter.

To the extent it was contemplated that that entry or exit from the city will not be restricted despite the social indiscipline of tourists and announcements from the municipality’s officiality that they intended to extend the quarantine to the tourism sector.

Therefore, there was no border closure and the pace of arrivals and departures of travelers through the transport terminal was maintained. Even Mayor Hurtado emphasized that everyone is welcome on the condition that they respect and comply with the new measures adopted by the administration.

The governor also told a local station that, with the support of the National Government and the Governor of Tolima, Ricardo Orozco, Brigades will be held in different neighborhoods of Ibagué to apply free coronavirus tests and thus establish greater epidemiological fences.

With measures such as those implemented in Ibagué, it is intended to stop the spread of covid-19 during Christmas and New Year in order to lower the national contagion figures. December 23th Colombia registered the highest number of people diagnosed with coronavirus by reporting 14,233 infected. In addition, the death toll from the virus in the country is 41,174 people.
