The hurricane Iota, which in the early hours of this Monday reached category 4, left incommunicado from 03.00 local time (08.00 GMT) to the island of Providence, populated by some 5,000 people and where the strong winds took the roofs of two of the shelters enabled for the emergency.

This was reported this Monday to Efe by the coordinator of San Andrés Risk Management, Walden Downs, who assured that at this time it is not possible to make a concrete report on what is happening in the archipelago of San Andrés and Providencia why the hurricane is still passing there.

“Our concern is with the municipality of Providencia because we have not had any reports from them since 3 in the morning,” said Downs, who is on the island of San Andrés in a telephone call.

He stated that before communications with Providencia, an island that has an area of 17 square kilometers, were cut off, they were informed about “two shelters that blew their roof off” and many “fallen trees.”

“Let’s see now that the breeze goes down so we can communicate with them,” he added.

According to him National Hurricane Center Miami, the sustained wind of Hurricane Iota is already 225 kilometers per hour, with even higher gusts, with a minimum pressure of 935 millibars.

A Category 4 hurricane is considered to be one that reaches up to 250 kilometers per hour, causes a rise in the tide of up to 5.5 meters and can cause widespread damage to protective structures, roof collapse in small buildings, high erosion of terraces and beaches and floods in inland areas.

On Saint Andrew, where they live more than 43,000 citizens, Downs said that there are “many trees on public roads, many trees have fallen on some homes”, but warned that he still cannot give a specific damage figure because “we are going through heavy rains.”

He also said that many houses lost their roofs in some areas of the island and that the community did not come en masse to the temporary shelters, as the authorities thought, although he said that they remain active.
