When a vehicle has been out of operation for more than a month, it should be prepared so that it is in perfect condition when started. Checking fluids, electrical system, and brakes is key. 1. Review the levels. Before starting, the coolant and engine oil levels should be checked. “After turning it on, it is advisable to leave the engine running for a few minutes before running. Thus the liquids circulate through all the conduits and lubricate all the parts ”, advises Josep Almasqué, head of the SEAT Press Car Workshop. It is important to note that there are no stains on the ground, especially under the engine area.
2. Check the tire pressure. As the days go by and when you don’t roll, the tire pressure decreases. This occurs due to the permeability process, by which the wheels lose a little air every day, a phenomenon that is more common in summer. If the vehicle is stationary and the tires are empty, the weight of the car could damage the rim and deform the wheel. “The indicated thing, if we know that the car is going to be stopped for a long time, is to fill the tires to the maximum of the capacity recommended by the manufacturer and check the pressure periodically. Before we start, we must recheck the pressure and put it at the indicated one to circulate ”, says Almasqué.
3. Double check. With the vehicle stationary, it is necessary to carry out a round of checking all the elements that are used while driving: lights, turn signals, window regulators, windscreen wipers and all electronic devices. This information is easy to obtain when connecting the Infotainment of the car. “If something is not working correctly, a warning light will come on the screen to indicate what needs checking. In addition, it is important to review that all the assistants that we use are connected with the settings that we have predetermined ”, according to Almasqué. The condition of the brakes must also be verified. For this, it is recommended to depress the pedal for a few seconds and note that it maintains its position. And finally, note that no abnormal noise is heard when starting.
4. Points to disinfect. It is important to clean the vehicle with emphasis on the areas of greatest contact, both outside and inside the car:
The basics. The exterior and interior handles, steering wheel, gear change, touch screen, indicator controls and position of the seats and window regulators.
Dashboard. It is one of the most important foci, since it is usually coughing or sneezing in its direction.
Floor mats. A lot of dirt accumulates in them and enters through the shoes.
Ventilation. To guarantee the quality of the air, it is necessary to avoid that the ventilation grids are obstructed. In addition to disinfecting them, dust must be removed with a brush or vacuum cleaner.
Exterior. Although we do not realize it, we manipulate many exterior areas of the car, in addition to the handles. We lean against windows, we open by holding the frame or we close by pushing the doors. It is important to use the right products: soap and water, specific car care products and, to a lesser extent, liquids that contain 70% alcohol.
