“We have the kill”, Francisco Emilio Mazo Pulgarín shouted anguished at being surrounded.

He breathed easy when a woman who was in civilian clothes identified herself as a member of the National Police. She was in charge of notifying Mazo that an arrest warrant was being issued against him for conspiracy to commit aggravated crimes.

Mazo was captured on a road in the exclusive sector of the Bella Suiza neighborhood, in the north of Bogotá. What the people who were watching the scene did not know, between stupefied and incredulous, is that This man was one of the most wanted in the country, accused of being the head of the organized criminal group ‘Los Pachelly’, that commits a crime in Antioquia, especially in the municipality of Bello.

Mazo Pulgarín, better known by the alias Pocho, was “hiding in Bogotá for about four or five months, where he spent the mandatory isolation due to the pandemic,” one of the investigators of the Judicial Police, Dijín, told EL TIEMPO who was in front of the investigation that led to his location and capture.

‘Pocho’, for whom up to 50 million pesos were offered, had been leading a territorial war against another organized criminal group called ‘el Mesa’ and that, according to the Police, has left 95 dead in Bello.

That is precisely why he was so scared when we went to capture him. Surely he thought at the time that they were hitmen from ‘El Mesa

“That is precisely why he was so scared when we went to capture him. Surely he thought at the time that they were hitmen from ‘El Mesa‘”Said the researcher.

‘Pocho’ was in charge of ‘the Pachelly’ after the capture of Albert Antonio Henao Acevedo, in a police operation on August 10. The man was located in the exclusive El Poblado sector of Medellín.

His brother, Alejandro Mazo, was murdered in March this year, in the middle of a dispute, inside the Cómbita prison.

‘The Pachelly’, according to Dijín, have 80 men in arms. Their criminal actions are concentrated in Bello, but they have been extended to municipalities such as Copacabana, Girardota, Barbosa and the 5 commune of Medellín (Castilla).

They are dedicated to drug trafficking, extortion and selective homicides. Hence the importance of the capture of ‘Pocho’ for the authorities.

Cheekbones plastic surgery

Several things caught the researchers’ attention. The first, that one of the most wanted drug traffickers in the country tried to change his physiognomy, “very surely not to be identified,” said the investigator, confirming that ‘Pocho ‘underwent a plastic surgery called bichectomy, which consists of a reduction or profiling of the cheeks.

Two years without knowing about his family

“Are you alive!”‘Pocho’s mother exclaimed when she went to see him after being transferred to Medellín.

‘Pocho’, 45, for the safety of his family, stopped communicating and seeing his wife, children and mother two years ago. Likewise, he did not use a cell phone, and his communications – the researchers were able to determine – were being made through encrypted platforms.

A deputy mayor, considered one of the best investigators of the Sijín de Medellín, undertook the task of locating ‘Pocho’. “She dedicated herself day and night to work the process against this criminal. She traveled to Bogotá, and in a full intelligence job she managed to establish the place where she was hiding“said the researcher.

The woman’s work paid off, and that was how he was located in the north of Bogotá. ‘Pocho’ was with two men, who were his bodyguards, “but it was identified that since the restrictions due to the virus were lifted, he went out on Sundays to have lunch alone, and that was the opportunity we took to capture him,” said the officer.

More than 30 years of criminal life

At the time, General Fabio López, director of the Judicial Police, Dijín, confirmed the capture of ‘Pocho’, and disclosed his criminal record.

“This individual had a criminal record of 30 years; He began his criminal activity when he was very young, since he belonged to one of the criminal family clans consolidated in the municipality of Bello“said General López, highlighting the importance of his capture.
