The coronavirus causes hypoxia and generates complications in some vital organs of the patients.
Said hypoxia results in a lack of oxygen in the tissues of the human body and is one of the conditions that complicates the health of people diagnosed with COVID-19. This is explained in the document sent to the media by the Minsalud, in which it clarifies that, based on scientific literature, in some cases the also known SARS-CoV-2 binds to microparticles (receptors), located in the lungs, kidneys and in other cells of the body.

The document warns that in older adults and people with chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, immunodeficiencies and cancer, among others, the virus produces a greater compromise of the mentioned organs and results in injury and a low amount of oxygen in tissues (hypoxia ).
“This is why patients require oxygen support, which, depending on the lung injury and compromise, ranges from a cannula to an artificial respirator and other more sophisticated methods to improve oxygenation due to hypoxemia,” adds Dr. Mójica, and concludes that if This affectation not detected in time can lead to death.
