The Superior Council of this university announced this afternoon that the lawyer Hernando Parra Nieto will be the new rector, replacing the lawyer Juan Carlos Henao. The contest for the position was between the former attorney, Edgardo Maya Villazón, Rafael Ostau de Lafont and Juan Pablo Estrada (who was the candidate for whom the student population leaned).
Hernando Parra Nieto is an emeritus professor at the Externado University, a distinction he achieved in 2018 and which is the highest academic recognition that a teacher can receive at a university in Colombia. For more than 20 years he has been a professor at the Faculty of Law, in the area of the Department of Civil Law; and he is fondly remembered for his good work as Secretary General of the institution for 14 years. Hernando Parra Nieto at the moment is 58 years old.
He is a lawyer graduated from Externado (1985), has a diploma in International Arbitration from the International Chamber of Commerce of Paris, France (2003) and another in Dispute Negotiation from Harvard Law School, Massachusetts, United States (2010). Likewise, he has a master’s degree in Law from LLM Boston University, Massachusetts, United States (2010).
He is a founding partner of Parra Nieto Abogados, a firm in which he has directed the litigation and conflict resolution department. He has more than 30 years of experience in litigation in declarative, executive, popular and group actions, and has acted as attorney-in-fact in national and international processes, in matters of contractual and tort liability. Likewise, he is an Arbitrator of the Arbitration and Conciliation Center of the Bogotá and Medellín Chamber of Commerce, and has also served as an international Arbitrator.
Within his professional practice, he has been an internal lawyer at Citibank and was also General Secretary and Legal Vice President of Banco Colpatria. He was a member of the Disciplinary Courts of the Colombian Stock Exchange and of the Self-regulating Securities Market. He was Deputy Judge of the Constitutional Court between 2007 and 2009, and then from 2020 to date. Likewise, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Minuto de Dios University (2012 – 2018) and of the Unitec University Corporation (2013 – 2020).
Among his greatest recognitions, he received The Best Lawyers in Colombia for his work as Arbitrator and Conflict Mediator, on November 11, 2020; He was also a Distinguished Arbitrator, recognition Carlos Lleras Restrepo, from the Centro de Arbitraje del Caribe, Cartagena, in 2008; and was an internationally distinguished Citibank official in 1988.
