Hamilton was given a 10-second penalty during Sunday’s race in Sochi for two separate violations while heading to the grid.
Hamilton was tried for failing to obey the directions of the race director by completing two practice runs at the wrong location, including one at the end of the pitlane.
This meant that Hamilton He finished the race in third place after leading the early stages by starting from pole position and Valtteri Bottas, his Mercedes teammate, took the win and cut the Briton 11 points in the championship.
The change of commissioners:
Hamilton said he “would have to see what the rules are or what exactly I did wrong” but did not think he had done anything out of the ordinary.
“I’m pretty sure no one has had two five-second penalties for something so ridiculous before,” Hamilton said.
“I didn’t put anyone in danger, I’ve done this on a million tracks over the years and I’ve never been questioned about it. But it is what it is.”
Hamilton also earned two penalty points in the FIA superlicense in addition to the time penalty, which left him one more incident from being excluded from a race.
When asked if he felt the stewards’ penalty was excessive, Hamilton replied: “Of course it is. But that’s to be expected. They’re trying to stop me, right?”
“But it’s okay. I just need to keep my head down and focus, and we’ll see what happens.”
In radio dialogue with his team during the race, Hamilton called the penalty “ridiculous” and “a f ** k,” and was also unhappy about being called to the pits.
Hamilton stopped at the end of lap 16 to switch from soft to hard tires and serve his penalty, but he wanted to stretch his stint.
“The plan was to stop on that lap, I was just trying to go as far as I could,” Hamilton said.
“It didn’t really change much. I had a long way to go on that tire, and I think I had done quite well on that soft one. We will discuss it and try to figure it out. I just need to make sure I don’t put myself in that position again.”
