Iglesias is second vice president and minister of Social Rights and Agenda 2030 of the Government of Spain since January 2020. He is also the secretary general of the Podemos party since 2014.
Petro said that “as a leader of the opposition in Colombia” he proposed to the Spanish government “if it can sovereignly transfer part of its surplus vaccines against COVID, that it transfers vaccines to the Colombian government regardless of political distances.”
And I add: “Europe, unlike Latin America, negotiated jointly with the pharmaceutical companies the purchase of vaccines in a quantity greater, by more than 10%, than the entire population. That is why part of their purchased vaccines can be donated. “

Iglesias has been a deep admirer of the Latin American left. In a speech at the UMET (Metropolitan University for Education and Work), after receiving an Honoris Causa and recognition from Clacso (Latin American Council of Social Sciences), he said:
“With you we have learned that there is another way of doing politics and another way of looking at ourselves. The story is ours and the peoples make it. Podemos is the son of a popular dignity movement, the 15M. It inspired us to act boldly, but that was not our only inspiration: I am obliged to acknowledge here the Latin American liberation experiences as inspiration and as a condition of possibility for Podemos ”.
Why is Latin America so important to Podemos? He was asked at the time. “We were moved by the electoral and political successes of the popular sectors. What was transforming at the beginning of this century enlightened us to be bold and try to turn theoretical reflection into political intervention ”, he argued.
“They taught us to recover the meaning of the word homeland. Thanks to you we have learned that those who do not pay taxes and destroy the public are unpatriotic and enemies of the country. A patriot is the one who cares and, as women have taught us, the one who knows that caring, respecting and empathizing is essential for a dignified homeland. Thank you for being the school where we learned to think politics, ”he added.
Today, after the meeting, both leftist leaders said it was a fraternal meeting.
Iglesias is vice president after the Spanish general elections in November 2019. After election day, Pedro Sánchez and Iglesias quickly announced a preliminary agreement between the PSOE and United We Can to govern together.
