The abrupt closure of the interview that Vicky Dávila, the director of Semana, gave to Gustavo Petro, originated when the journalist addressed the issue of Petro’s militancy in the M-19 armed group.
Before, Dávila asked the politician about his relationship with Nicolás Maduro and Hugo Chávez, about what would happen to the banks and the bankers if he came to power, about the Eln and the FARC dissidents, about the video in which he he sees that the leftist politician receives a few wads of bills and on whether he would hand over power after he eventually becomes president.
Faced with all those thorny issues, the politician responded in his own way. But when the issue of the M-19 came up, a movement that assassinated union leader José Raquel Mercado and took the Palace of Justice with blood and fire, Petro and Dávila got into a tough discussion.
“You have me as a friend of Maduro. You have me as an expropriator. You have me as a market assassin. You have me as sponsor of the taking of the Palace of Justice, because I was from the M-19 “Petro responded to one of Dávila’s concerns, and then he counterattacked with a pointing at her: “No, ma’am. That is not true. You are doing an electoral-type strategy, which is precisely to cause fear”.
Petro assured that he had nothing to do with Mercado’s death (because he said that he was 13 years old when that happened), he maintained that he was not involved in the taking of the Palace of Justice, nor has he any relationship with Maduro, “because I have never had any kind of of relationship with him, “he said, and he lashed out at Dávila again.
“You want to build a story. It is the story that suits you, because you want to campaign for whoever Uribe tells. But I don’t have to let myself be slandered. And I hope these words can go out to the public, ”Petro said. “The story of my participation in the M-19 is not the one you tell.”

Dávila confronted him and reiterated his claim. “You belonged to a criminal group“, But Petro responded by saying that he studied law and assuring that” rebellion is not a common crime. It is a political crime ”.
“They took the Palace of Justice and killed people”Davila insisted.
Petro responded by demanding that he not make it look like “what a rebellion as if it were a group of thugs. What you had in the M-19 were young politicians ”.
“Do not. They were thugs “Dávila said, and the atmosphere of the interview began to heat up.
“They weren’t thugs. They were rebels, revolutionaries “Petro replied.
“Yes they were thugs,” stressed the journalist, with the technique of the drop that begins to pierce the stone.
“You don’t like revolutionaries?” Petro asked. Say it. But tell us how we are ”.
“They were thugs,” Dávila said again, and that was the beginning of the end of the tense dialogue.
Vicky Dávila’s interview with Gustavo Petro today
“Well, Vicky, then you don’t have to interview a thug. I release her from this, ”Petro said, and went on to close. “[…] You have to differentiate what is the right to rebel against a tyrannical State or the brotherhood with the State to massacre the population. […] And he has not understood. And I am not next to Bolívar, but I am from that school. Others are on Hitler’s side. Bolívar is not similar to Hitler, even if they used weapons. Because Hitler is a thug from the state and Bolívar is a rebel. And a generation of Colombians were rebels. Then don’t call me a thug, because I’m not. Thank you very kind”.
