Gunpowder burns in Colombia were 538 in December

The National Institute of Health (INS) delivered a preliminary report of the number of gunpowder injuries in the middle of the New Year’s celebration. On the night of December 31, according to data from the 4:00 p.m. court on January 1, there were 43 injured. So far as of January 1, 60 gunpowder injuries have already been reported.

The figure represents a significant decrease compared to those injured at New Years Eve parties in 2019. For that year, there were 103 injured on December 31 and 222 injured on January 1, 2020.

With this report, the total number of injured by gunpowder handling in Colombia reached 538, a decrease of 30.76% compared to the 2019-2020 period, when those burned with gunpowder reached 777.

Of those injured to date, 187 are minors and 351 are over 18 years of age. Five people have died from gunpowder injuries, while for the previous period, only one person died from the same cause.

INS reported that 65% of those injured were affected while handling gunpowder. Another 19% were observers, 3% were affected by the storage of gunpowder and 1% by its transport.

Regarding the type of injury of those affected, 92% suffered burns, 69% lacerations, 30% contusions, 13% amputation, 6% eye damage and 2% hearing damage.

The elements that caused the most injuries this year-end season were totes (32%), followed by other elements (25%), flying (12%), rockets (9%), volcanoes (5%), lights of flare (2%), whistles (2%), fireworks (2%) and balloons (0.6%).

The departments with the most injuries on this occasion were Valle (62), Antioquia (57), Nariño (52), Tolima (49), Bogotá (40) and Cauca (36).
