The pronouncement of the Health portfolio came after the idea came to the fore in Congress that strata 5 and 6 should pay for the COVID-19 vaccine, if it arrives in Colombia.

The idea was included in the bill that seeks to make vaccines free and is promoted by congressmen such as Gustavo Bolívar, María del Rosario Guerra and Efraín Cepeda, according to Portafolio; however, the Government indicates that this idea is contrary to the law.

Exactly, the Ministry of Health said, according to El Tiempo, that to charge the vaccine against COVID-19 to Colombians of strata 5 and 6 “It would violate the principle of equality in access to health”; furthermore, the idea is to immunize the majority of Colombians.

“Historically, universal vaccination has been contemplated for the entire population of Colombia, in some cases prioritizing sectors but never stratifying,” the ministry said, according to the newspaper.

And it is that the idea does not take into account that some Colombians in strata 5 and 6 suffer from so-called hidden poverty, that is, They have properties in exclusive neighborhoods, but many times they don’t even have what to eat.

In addition to the Ministry of Health, other congressmen rejected that idea.

Who would be the first vaccinated against COVID-19?

If an eventual injection arrives to avoid catching coronavirus, the first vaccinated, according to the Ministry of Health, would be high-risk people “such as health personnel, over 60 years and people with chronic diseases, which is equivalent to 14 million ”Colombians.

“Likewise, immunize the economically active population to generate herd immunity, which allows the generation of social and economic activities with the greatest possible tranquility,” said the portfolio in a past statement.
