It didn’t take him long to win the love and respect of the community. Her gift of service, her generosity, as well as her leadership quickly made her a close and loved person. This was Juana María Perea, the Colombian-Spanish leader, murdered in Nuquí, in the department of Chocó.

No more than four years ago he came to this land where he decided to help, contribute and reach out to those who needed him. At 50 years old, she was a woman of strong character, but very happy and with great desire to support the people who live in this beautiful municipality of the Colombian Pacific..

The environmental leader had lived in Nuquí for about four years. Photo taken from Juana Perea’s Facebook.

“Above all things, Juana was a loving person, who preached, professed and gave love. It didn’t take long for her to become friends with the people and be admired by the people who live in this municipality, “says a person very close to Juana who asked not to be identified.

She had started the construction of an eco-hotel that was her dream, it was her “chocoadventure”, an initiative that began to take shape out of nowhere together with her husband, a US citizen who works as a contractor firefighter in Afghanistan, in the village of Termales. Started with a small hut and little by little they began to shape it to the extent that economic possibilities allowed them.

He always looked for opportunities for the communities, he supported people in any way according to their needs. They say that, for example, this year before the quarantine began, he convinced several friends to support a young man who had fallen into drugs and wanted to help him with his rehabilitation process. Today, thanks Juana, the boy is rehabilitating in the city of Cali.

Caring for nature was one of his passions. Photo taken from Juana Perea’s Facebook.

This leader was also an active member of a women’s enterprise called “El Costurero del Golfo”, which was born from the needs generated by the pandemic. She was a manager in the territory and communicated to the project leaders about the problems that could arise in the Termales satellite, in which she was present.

She was a diving instructor and had no children. Much of the time he was in this area was dedicated to leading ecotourism and recycling initiatives, among other projects.

In recent days he had dedicated himself to working on the implementation of biosafety protocols for accommodation in the area, given that tourism is one of the main economic activities of the municipality of Nuquí.. He supported surf schools and led campaigns in favor of recycling, which is precisely one of the problems facing the beaches and the Pacific Ocean in this part of the country: pollution.

Her friends say she was driven forward, with a strong character. That she knew how to do everything and in everything she supported showed her leadership, always proposing and being very proactive. He had big plans for his 10 hectare piece of land that he had bought and on which he had started the construction of his eco-hotel. However, all of them were truncated by the hand of the violent ones who ended their lives with a gunshot.

The authorities indicate that in the area where the crime occurred, the peaceful structure of the Gulf Clan commits a crime.

The struggles of this leader were marked by social causes and the protection of the environment. Photo: Taken from Juana Perea’s Facebook.

No to the Port of Tribugá

Without being recognized as the visible head of those in the region who oppose the construction of a port in the Gulf of Tribugá, Juana María Perea He was always against this project and never hid his opposition to it, which – say the inhabitants of Nuquí – would seriously affect both ecosystems and communities.

Close people say he never spoke of any kind of threat, That is why the bewilderment and uncertainty today surround those who live in this Chocoano municipality and ask for greater security, since illegal groups surround the area and since they are not clear about the causes that could have generated their death, the communities ask for support from the Government to clarify the fact.

Juana’s death leaves sadness, desolation and fear, because she was not the visible head of any of those struggles, he only cared about helping his community.

Faced with the incident, the mayor of that municipality, Yefer Andrey Gamboa, asked to increase the force of force, as well as the presence of judicial police.

In an open letter, sent to the Chocó Police Commander, the municipal official assures that he only has nine police patrol cars despite the multiple letters he has sent requesting reinforcements. On the contrary, it says that the number of men was reduced, after the withdrawal of four high school assistants from the municipality in recent days. In its official communication, it also indicates that there are multiple crimes of different types that are not investigated and that “all remain in impunity.”

The voices of rejection and solidarity with the Nuquí community have not been long in coming and through social networks different personalities have expressed their discomfort about what is happening and why the upsurge in violence is evident in this region of the country.
