Mark Padun (Bahrain-McLaren) resigns. The Ukrainian cannot be happy after being deprived of the possibility of fighting for the stage victory because of an inopportune puncture just over 15 miles from the end.
Padun got into the good escape of the twelfth stage of the Giro d’Italia and managed to stand out more than 50 kilometers to the end with the Ecuadorian Jhonatan Narvez (Ineos Grenadier), ultimately the winner, but the puncture made him lose a few seconds that could no longer recover.
“That’s what cycling is like,” says the Ukrainian Bahrain-McLaren rider with resignation.
“It’s hard to be happy after second place, but I know I had a good stage,” he adds. “If I try again? We are here to help our leader Pello Bilbao and, fortunately, my condition is improving day by day. I hope I have another chance,” he adds.
Bahrain-McLaren Sporting Director Franco Pellizotti explains that “it was a long day and we had a bit of bad luck. We decided to put Mark on the breakaway during the team meeting before the start, and he did a great job all day. The mechanical failure with 15 miles to go prevented him from trying to win, but he must be happy with his excellent performance. “
