A generalized rejection in different political sectors produced this Thursday the attack against the Nasa indigenous leader of Cauca and senator for the Alternative Indigenous and Social Movement (Mais) Feliciano Valencia.

The congressman denounced the violent act that occurred around 9:30 in the morning, while he was going on a road in Toribío, Cauca, to commemorate the murder of five indigenous people, which occurred a year ago.
Valencia assured that when he was passing through the El Tierrero area, he was intercepted by armed civilian men who tried to stop the truck in which he was traveling with his security team. Given the refusal to stop, they were shot several times.
“As evidence there are the three bullet wounds that the truck assigned by the National Protection Unit (UNP) has,” warned the congressman, who was unhurt from the incident along with his companions.

After that, the senator and his protection team went to the Tacueyó reservation, where they were protected by the indigenous guard.

President Iván Duque contacted the indigenous senator to express his solidarity. For her part, the Minister of the Interior, Alicia Arango, said that they will give speed to clarify this violent act, which is already being investigated by the Prosecutor’s Office and is accompanied by the Ombudsman’s Office.
The congressman called on the National Government to safeguard the lives of the mingueros and defenders of life.

Faced with the events, politicians from different sectors expressed their solidarity with Valencia and expressed their repudiation against the attack.
Uribista senator Gabriel Velasco condemned and rejected the act. “We condemn any attempt on his life,” he sentenced.
For his part, the president of the Senate, Arturo Char, from Cambio Radical, asked to strengthen the senator’s security and carry out investigations to clarify the attack.
And José Miguel Vivanco, director of the Americas for Human Rights Watch, pointed out that “there must be a serious, impartial and reliable investigation that clarifies the facts.”

Defender of the earth
Valencia was born in Santander de Quilichao, Cauca, in 1965, and is currently a prominent NASA leader.
His defense of land ownership for his community and indigenous rights led him to win the National Peace Prize in 2000.

In 2015, he spent a few months in prison for the alleged kidnapping and punishment of a member of the Public Force, but the Supreme Court of Justice upheld the existence of indigenous jurisdiction and ordered his freedom.
In 2018 he reached the Congress of the Republic.
