“Our beloved guide and leader rests in the arms of God, together with Jesus and Mary,” the Callejeros de la Misericordia Foundation said in a statement.
He was ordained a Franciscan priest in 1988, after studying at the seminary in Cali, and decided to dedicate his life to those most in need. For 15 years he lived with the indigenous people of the Pacific coast, in Guapi, and after spending a few years in Africa, he returned to work with the street dwellers in Bogotá.
Towards 2015, he began to walk through the sixth street pipe in Bogotá and talk with the inhabitants of the street, who, after the intervention of the Bronx by the Mayor’s Office of Enrique Peñalosa, had concentrated there.
“There is mourning in Bogotá and Colombia for the departure of the angel of the street dwellers. Heaven, however, celebrates the arrival of a generous soul who gave everything on this earth for the poorest. His work will be remembered forever. Your patch, your companions, we cry for you and we will never forget you ”, added the Foundation.
“We deeply regret the death of Fray, a warrior and fighter for the human rights of the street dwellers of Bogotá and Colombia. We will continue his work and honor his legacy with all dedication and even more so in a year as difficult as this one ”, the mayor of Bogotá, Claudia López, said on her Twitter account.
