As a preventive measure for a possible Brazilian variant of the Sars-CoV-2 in Tabatinga, a neighboring municipality to Leticia, President Iván Duque announced this Wednesday that flights to and from Brazil are suspended for a period of 30 days, starting on January 29, at 00 hours in Colombia, when the measure takes effect.

“We know that there is information that at this time is being explored not only by the Brazilian authorities but also by other countries of a new strain or lineage that has been identified in that territory,” said the Head of State.

In this sense, he added that “as a preventive measure, and for a period of 30 days, where all observations are made, the measure of restriction of flights from Colombia to Brazil or from Brazil to Colombia is taken.”

The president pointed out that this measure applies to passenger transport, not cargo transport. That is, for those who arrive in Colombia by direct air or by connection.

“That is to say that on Friday they will not be able to board any flight from there to Colombia, from that time (00 in Colombia),” said the Minister of Health, Fernando Ruiz.

The official pointed out that the entry of the traveler will only be admitted under six conditions:

1. Colombians or foreigners who start their flight from Brazil before the effective date of the resolution. “Any flight that starts before 00 hours on Friday will be able to enter the country,” Ruiz said.

2. Travelers who, due to a time difference, have already been summoned to the terminal, prior to the entry into force of the measure.

3. Foreigners who have a migrant visa.

4. Colombians and foreigners who have permanent residence in Colombia, who are authorized to take humanitarian flights.

5. The crew of the aircraft.

6. Cargo and State flights.

In this way, he pointed out that “Colombia Migration may deny access to any foreigner to Colombian territory, under the aforementioned conditions, and the passengers admitted from the entry into force of the measure must take all preventive health measures and quarantine of 14 days counted from the date of entry to Colombia “.

In addition, for travelers from Brazil who have entered the country, between January 18 and 11:59 p.m. on January 27, 2021 “they must comply with a 14-day quarantine from the date of entry to the country

It should be remembered that the land border is still closed, however, the president warned that they made the decision to “strengthen the capacity for epidemiological monitoring and supervision, with the local authorities, with the governor of the Amazon and the mayor of Leticia.”

The head of the health portfolio assured that this transitory measure, in principle, will last 30 days, and there they will analyze “the specific situation of the appearance of the B1128 lineage in Brazil.”

“Based on this, we will be evaluating the different studies that are published doing analysis” on this topic, to make decisions once this period is over.
